Wynyard Quarter Opening Day - 6 August 2011

Wynyard Quarter, Auckland’s newest waterfront destination, opens Saturday 6 August. There will be an exciting day of free activities for the whole family, so make sure you check it out.

Opening ceremony
From 7am in Viaduct Harbour
Experience history in the making - witness the opening of a brand new part of Auckland’s waterfront. The spectacular dawn ceremony will have an official powhiri by local iwi, complete with waka paddling into Viaduct Harbour. Mayor Len Brown and Prime Minister John Key will be there too.

Play a ditty
All day at North Wharf
Tune into your inner musical talents on an upright piano redecorated by a Kiwi artist and available for public use during the day. A new concept for public spaces in Auckland, it has been a hit in cities internationally and is set to get Wynyard Quarter humming.

Public art launch and tour
10am at Gateway Plaza
Stimulate your creative side at the official opening of three public artworks in Wynyard Quarter. This will be followed by a tour to learn firsthand about them from the Auckland Council public arts team.

Boat rides and display
10am-5pm in Viaduct Harbour
From tugboats to classic yachts, a variety of local boats will be on display. You’ll also have the chance to ride aboard the old steam ship SS Puke. Back on land, learn more about Auckland’s maritime history at Voyager Maritime Museum, which is free to Auckland residents (with proof of address).

Heritage tours
10am-5pm (on the hour) at Gateway Plaza
Discover the heritage of the area. Tours start from the kiosk on the hour until 5pm.

Scale the heights
10am-5pm in Silo Park
If you’re fit and up for a challenge, grab the opportunity to climb the steps of the concrete silos. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best views in town.

Lantern workshops
11am-4pm at Gateway Plaza
This is a great daytime activity for the kids, where they’ll be able to make a floating lantern. At dusk, the lanterns will be launched into the harbour from the new tidal steps at the foot of Gateway Plaza.

Live music
Noon-5pm in Silo Park
Check out a diverse selection of local and Kiwi bands playing throughout the afternoon at this new park overlooking Westhaven Marina. This will be the first in a fortnightly series of concerts to look forward to.

Outdoor movie
7.30pm-9.30pm in Silo Park
When the evening rolls round, grab some fish-and-chips from the Auckland Seafood Market on Jellicoe Street and head back to Silo Park to catch an outdoor movie. The classic Some Like it Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, will screen on the side of a 30m-high concrete silo.
