The Takapuna Sunday Market is an outdoor event in the Anzac Ave carpark which is wonderfully convenient for local people who use the beach and local cafés in mornings. And the bus terminal runs next door to the market, bringing shoppers as far afield as Devonport and Milford. The range and quality of stalls is highly variable, many are seasonal and temporary, but a few regulars provide excellent fresh food produce and homemade, antiques, music, flowers, books, fish, breads and bakery and second hands. The feel is cosmopolitan, friendly and safe. A microcosm of the central North Shore, from elderly through to young urban singles and a lot of wealthy middle class families in between. Dress is predominantly jeans and sneakers, sunglasses and chic casual. A lot of people bring their pooches on leashes. It gets crowded by 10am, uncomfortably so on fine days. Manners are move with the crowd and step aside to stop and view a stall. Eye contact and a smile with stall holders is at least polite and often appreciated. Try the rag and bone stalls on the opposite side of Hurstmere, for shoes and clothing.
One of Auckland's best outdoor markets for local artisan craft, fruits, veggies, jams, honey, coffee, pastries, pasta and of course the many many food stalls. Take your bounty to Takapuna Beach a few minutes walk from the market. Safe and easy to get to. Get there early for easy parking or take the convenient bus from the city.
