Guy Fawkes Night returns to Auckland in 2016 celebrating 411 years since Guy Fawkes famously attempted to destroy Parliament and the heart of political London with gunpowder, treason and plot.
The Gunpowder Plot
In 1605 a group of conspirators devised a plot to destroy Westminster with powerful explosives, in an attempt to devastate Parliament and kill King James I. The now infamous Gunpowder Plot was intended to strike at the heart of the political system in London and give political power to the Roman Catholics. The Gunpowder Plot was organised by a group of five conspirators including Guy Fawkes.
The conspirators packed a cellar beneath the Palace of Westminster with barrels of gunpowder, planning to blow up the Palace on 5th November 1605. However, the plan leaked and Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed in the cellars, following which he was tortured and eventually executed.
Fireworks displays to remember Guy Fawkes
Though no explosions actually took place on 5th November 1605, the historic event is traditionally celebrated each year with colourful fireworks displays, representing what could have been if Guy Fawkes had been successful. Other Guy Fawkes night traditions include the setting of bonfires and making Guy Fawkes dummies.
Gunpowder, treason and plot
With 411 years having passed since the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, 2016 again celebrates the thwarting of Guy Fawkes' plot. Accordingly fireworks displays will be taking place throughout Auckland, many of which will include food and drink and other family attractions.
