HISTORY
Eden Park is New Zealand’s largest stadium hosting international sports events. It is home to the 2011 Rugby World Cup and will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as the semi finals and finals of the tournament. The Eden Park area has been used for sport for more than 100 years and has recently undergone a $250 million upgrade in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup. The stadium’s capacity will be temporarily increased during the Rugby World Cup from 50,000 to 60,000. Eden Park will also host games of the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

  • Hosting the British Empire Games (precursor to the Commonwealth Games) in 1950
  • Visit by the Queen Mother in 1966

  • Russian Olympic Gymnastic display in 1974
  • Pitch flour bombed in 1981 by an anti-apartheid activist during the final test match between New Zealand and South Africa. One New Zealand player is felled
  • Visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1983
  • Hosting the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup and 1992 Cricket World Cup
  • Visit by the Dalai Lama in 2002

    RUGBY WORLD CUP GAMES
    Eden Park Stadium will play host to the following games of the 2011 Rugby World Cup:
  • New Zealand v Tonga (8.30pm September 9)
  • Australia v Ireland (8.30pm September 17)
  • New Zealand v France (8.30pm September 24)
  • Fiji v Samoa (3.30pm September 25)
  • England v Scotland (8.30pm October 1)
  • QUARTER-FINAL: Winner Pool B v Runner-up Pool A (8.30pm October 8)
  • QUARTER-FINAL: Winner Pool A v Runner-up Pool B (8.30pm October 9)
  • SEMI-FINAL: Winner QF1 v Winner QF2 (9pm October 15)
  • SEMI-FINAL: Winner QF3 v Winner QF4 (9pm October 16)
  • BRONZE FINAL: Loser SF1 v Loser SF2 (8.30pm October 21)
  • FINAL: Winner SF1 v Winner SF2 (9pm October 23)

    PUBLIC TRANSPORT
    There will be extensive road closures around the Eden Park area on game day. Public transport will be your easiest way to get to the game.

    Train: Kingsland Station is the closest to Eden Park and the two are joined by a wide paved walkway, making movements between the station and the stadium easy and fast. Trains are also FREE on all rail lines from 3 hours prior to the game. Simply show your pre-purchased ticket.

    On game days trains from the Southern and Eastern lines, as well as those coming from Britomart will terminate at Kingsland. After the game travelers going towards these places will leave from Kingsland Station.

    Passengers arriving from stations on the Southern and Eastern lines, as well as those coming from Britomart will depart at Kingsland station. Kingsland station is joined to Eden Park by a wide paved walkway, making movements between the two quick and easy. After the game trains will depart Kingsland for Britomart, where transfers can be made for passengers going South or East.

    Passengers arriving from stations on the Western line will depart at Morningside station, a short walk from Eden Park along Morningside Drive and Rossmay Terrace. After the game passengers travelling West will again use Morningside station, some trains departing Morningside will terminate at Henderson.

    Bus: Spectators travelling on special event buses from Auckland CBD, Northern Busway Stations, Takapuna, Manukau/Botany/Pakuranga and Newmarket/Mt Eden can show their match ticket for that day and travel for free (3 hours before and after the game).
