Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2012 Kaleidoscopes season

Italian superstar ensemble I Musici headlines Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2012 Kaleidoscopes season.

The group, known for selling 25 million copies of its recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has its debut New Zealand season in February and March as part of a world tour celebrating its 60th anniversary.

I Musici opens the 2012 Chamber Music New Zealand Kaleidoscopes season which features seven concert tours across 10 centres with performers coming from the United States, Italy, Russia, Hungary and Germany together with a superb line-up of New Zealand musicians and performers.

Chamber Music New Zealand chief executive Euan Murdoch says he is delighted to bring an outstanding line-up of musicians to New Zealand audiences in 2012.

“I cannot wait to experience the legendary sound of I Musici opening our season, but I’m equally as excited about other highlights of the 2012 programme. Across the year, exceptional music will be shaped and revealed by the hands of masters with every performance promising something unique.”

I Musici will perform a special programme of Italian music Serenata Italiana and begin the tour in Wellington on Tuesday 28 February as part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival, followed by performances in Palmerston North, Napier, New Plymouth, Hamilton, Auckland, Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch and Nelson.

2012 is a special year for a number of ensembles and Chamber Music New Zealand is part of the New Zealand String Quartet 25th anniversary celebrations. In a special programme, Beethoven: Revolution, the quartet will perform Beethoven string quartets in 10 centres nationwide during April and May; while acclaimed New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun marks his 60th birthday in October with four concerts performing Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations.

Michael Hill International Violin Competition 2011 winner Sergey Malov tours New Zealand with Michael Houstoun in June including three concerts with cellist Ashley Brown; the world-renowned Takács Quartet returns in July for a five-centre tour; and New Zealand’s finest woodwind players come together as Zephyr Wind Quintet for a 10-centre tour in September and October.

Soprano Madeleine Pierard returns to New Zealand for a 10-centre concert tour with pianist Terence Dennis. Madeleine’s sister Anna joins the tour for concerts in Auckland, New Plymouth, Napier and Palmerston North. The programme will include a new work by New Zealand composer Ross Harris.

Exciting young New York-based ensemble Enso String Quartet heads to New Zealand with German-born pianist Michael Endres in October and November. Enso String Quartet was nominated for a 2010 Grammy for ‘Best Chamber Music Performance’ for the recording of Ginastera Quartets and features Christchurch-born cellist Richard Belcher.
