The programme is an exciting line-up of traditional classics with strong Mozartian links. Mozart’s youthful Divertimento starts this string-infused concert, followed by Grieg’s Holberg Suite, composed to mark the 200th anniversary of Ludvig Holberg’s birth, and which pays homage to the classical era.

The viola takes centre stage in this concert as the violist Maxim Rysanov returns to perform his own arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, originally written for cello. This magnificent arrangement has received rave reviews worldwide. “Maxim Rysanov's version…is one of the most successful steals, not tampering with the orchestral score but simply shifting the solo part, sometimes up an octave to give its virtuosic writing brilliance and allure” (The Guardian).

The concert closes with the full orchestra performing Schubert’s Fifth Symphony, in the third movement of which you can hear snippets of Mozart’s Symphony No.40. A wonderful way to wrap up a beautiful concert.
