We had the best time at the Auckland Art Gallery last weekend! I love that it does not cost anything unless you want to go to the current exhibitions. We wandered around for hours looking at amazing artworks of NZ and overseas artists. It was great to overhear staff talking to people about what the artist is portraying, and educating people as they viewed different pieces.
There was even live music playing on the steps inside the building, which gave it a nice atmosphere.
Well worth a look!

The Auckland Art Gallery is a must for any art lover. The current Degas to Dali exhibition is well worth viewing, but if you don't fancy the entry fee, there are loads of free exhibitions that cover top quality art from Victorian times, to pop art. Definitely recommended.

Wow! The new Auckland Art Gallery is amazing and I think anyone who visits will get something out of it. The architecture is stunning - from the restored older parts of the building to the beautiful new spaces filled with light, the building is a work of art in itself. The Kauri canopies that cover the entrance give it a distinct NZ feel and there is a great mix of NZ and international art. I have been twice with children so far, and they have really enjoyed both the gallery spaces and the new Learning Centre. I think the trick is to limit yourself to certain areas with the kids, because you can always go back and do more later. If you are prepared with a little bit of knowledge about what you are going to see, and have a few questions for them up your sleeve, they learn alot and may also surprise you with some of their observations!
