Better and brighter than ever, Art in the Dark is back for its third year and is ready to light up Ponsonby’s
Western Park with creative projects from New Zealand’s most innovative artists.
On 9 and 10 November 2012, incredible installations, short films and performances will have the park
glowing with ingenuity. This free event has become a platform for bright Kiwi minds to show-off their
talents, and a chance for the community to get involved in the art world from the comfort of their city’s own
backyard.
With over forty artists already on the Art in the Dark 2012 rostra, the event is gearing up to be our finest
yet. Visiting from Australia, Kit Webster is bringing his amazing ‘Enigmatica’ project, to get Auckland amped
about the potential of 3D video mapping. Alongside the bright lights, there’ll be Alex Bartleet’s section of
breathing grass, Hannah Jensen’s swirling school of fish in motion around one of the park’s beautiful oak
trees and the gentle, magical interactivity of Tiffany Singh’s musical branches amongst many, many more
incredible installations.
This year has also seen a collaboration between Art in the Dark and Philips Lighting, in association with
AUT. The competition invited students to design installations using Phillips’ great range of eco-friendly lights. The results were as different as they were innovative, and the three winners look set to bring spectacular edge to the Art in the Dark line up. Using prisms, J Hyeon Seong will incorporate the ethereal quality of reflective light to cast attendees into a contemplative state. Investigating light in a different way, Out of the Dark will see a stunning, enormous canopy of bulbs strung through Western Park while Nicholas O’Rourke and Sophy Leang’s winning entry will see a river of lights, running into a waterfall.
With projects set to be more spectacular than ever, we’re incredibly proud to be in our third year. The Art in the Dark team is committed to bringing New Zealand talent to New Zealand and the rest of the world. Kiwi
sparks are just too bright to ignore!
