150 Years Around the Piano at Highwic

An Anniversary Variety Entertainment Concert in the ballroom of Highwic to celebrate 150 years since Alfred and Eliza Buckland moved into this gracious Auckland home. A cast led by well known actress Ilona Rodgers and singer/harpist Cathie Harrop,( see below) with Auckland musicians including violinist Joe Harrop, mandolin and guitar player Dave Khan, cellist Jennie Khan, Soprano Amanda Kirk, and Pianist and accompanist Paul Harrop.

This versatile group, will take you through a concert of the music and theatre that the Buckland family enjoyed from 1862 until the death of the last original family member Phoebe Buckland in 1953. This old home will come alive with memories from children’s music lessons to concerts and parties, and visiting theatre and musicial companies of the time that were part of the lives of Alfred Buckland and his 21 children.

Come a little early for a glass of wine and a wander through this faithfully restored, elegantly furnished home, and then take you seat in the ballroom and enjoy a unique glimpse of Auckland’s musical and theatrical past Afterwards you will be invited to join us in the billiard room for Cake and Coffee and Conversation with the performers Ilona Rodgers is one of New Zealand’s leading actresses, and well known theatre practitioner.

She has starred in a huge array of film and TV roles in NZ ,Australia and the UK. Cathie Harrop, an Auckland based musician and teacher is a leading authority on the entertainments of early New Zealand settlers. Together Ilona and Cathie presented the highly acclaimed long running National Radio series “Pioneer Families of NZ” and have collaborated on several live performances throughout New Zealand .
