The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Styled after the European sandwich shops the Dutch owner enjoyed while he was growing up. Translated into NZ-style, that means a classic décor of wooden floors and pristine white walls. It’s an unadorned canvas that can get pretty noisy with overlapping conversations on a busy Thursday morning.
Service
Prompt and efficient, but somewhat aloof, and a bit too cool for school at times. Bonus points however for the great selection of up to date food, travel and lifestyle magazines.
Drink’s List
Excellent coffee delivered hot with a perfect crema on top, and interesting long hot days of summer variations including fruit lassis and virgin mojitos.
Highlights
Apart from a few simple breakfast items – organic eggs, sourdough and raisin toast – Zus & Zo specialises in cold and hot sandwiches. Standout variations include Moroccan chicken with eggplant and mint yoghurt dressing, and grilled pork and fennel sausages with tomato relish. Choose from five different types of bread.
Most Surprising Dish
The fresh sandwich combining roast pumpkin, grilled courgette, pine nuts and date chutney. Have it on gluten-free bread if you’re feeling really virtuous.
The Bottom Line
Zus & Zo offers an interesting spin on the classic neighbourhood café showing that the humble sandwich can definitely be elevated to another level. Superbly prepared coffee also makes this worthy of a visit.
A Reason to Return
The serve-yourself jars of luscious homemade preserves including cherry and vanilla jam, and the freshly-baked sponge cakes crammed with whipped cream.
