I'm a newcomer to Devonport - Devonport is highly touted by Kiwis and tourist guides and indeed it is a nice place to stroll along the sea and some nice boutiques. But the food is universally bad to barely mediocre. I have been here 2 weeks and tried about 8 or 10 restaurants and have been unable to get a meal I would call decent, except for the fish and chips shop which is great. For each meal you are expected to pay large sums of money and wind up getting something you can get in the frozen aisle at New World. If you cross the bridge to Auckland, you get much better deals and good fresh food eg great Asian food, sushi etc.
We visited on recommendation, however I suspect that the lack of customers should have been a warning to us.
The food was fast and well presented, but a little mediocre in taste. Simple things such as kumara chips where dry and hard to digest, whilst the pork with feta stuffed tomatos was a good combination, the pork was over cooked and quite chewy.
In saying this, the environment itself was open uncramped and enjoyable, they now just need to find staff with personality to make you feel more welcome rather than stand around watching whilst you eat because they have little else to do, let alone talk to each other.
Go if you have to, don't go if you don't.
I can honestly say that the first three meals at this restaurant were not good. But as I was aware that they had hired new staff, I persisted on going, as I felt they would do better.
I am very pleased to say the last two times I went to Zigana Espresso Coffee Roasters, the meals and service have been impeccable!
I hear what the first reviewer says, and do not want to underwrite him/her, but I would recommend you give them a try. They have definitely improved.
I would rate them as the top Devonport restaurant at the moment. Best on price, value for money, and service. I should know, I live and eat regularly in Devonport.
I have never experienced such rude, unreasonable and offensive service as that experienced at Zigana Espresso Coffee Roasters.
The long and short of this review is that we booked for 15 people, but brought 18. While it would have been an easy and simple solution just to let us have another table, the owner told us we couldn't; that we booked for 15 and we'd all have to squeeze in (this was in a nearly emply restaurant).
At one point, while this discussion was going on, the owner nearly assaulted one of our group when she attempted to move the empty table over to ours. I could understand if the restaurant was packed, but the fact of the matter was the restaurant was nearly empty. What restaurant would not want three more covers for the day?
