The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
One part funky warehouse with comfy sofas, and one part showcase of an amazing range of cool old motorcycles, vintage scooters, and travel memorabilia.
Service
Slacker, but in a good way, with the hip wait staff always keen to chat about the merits of good coffee, food (and motorbikes).
Highlights
York St Mechanic’s menu is changing on a regular basis, but we enjoyed a great housemade granola studded with honey and pomegranate seeds. Other brunch goodies include grilled haloumi sandwiches.
Most Surprising Dish
The lighter dinner options of quinoa salad with black olives, red onion and dried cranberry ($10) or a poached chicken salad with quail eggs ($18).
Drinks List
Turbo-charged coffee, freshly-squeezed juices, and a tiny but perfectly adequate winelist with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Release your inner petrolhead (or scarfie) with big bottles of Lion Red.
The Bottom Line
York St Mechanic’s is an effortlessly cool spot for brunch and coffee or a more leisurely lunch, even if you’re not into vintage and retro motorbikes.
A Reason To Return
To come back for a well-priced dinner including eye fillet steak sandwiches with hand cut chips ($20) or house made spaghetti with porcini mushrooms, truffle oil and pine nuts ($18).
