I had a very peculiar lunch at the Wintergarden Pavilion. Ordered the Caesar salad with anchovies and sundried tomato. What arrived was a bowl of dressed lettuce with weirdly textured (stale? packaged?) croutons and, worst of all, a cold poached egg on top. It was pretty inedible, as well as missing the crucial ingredients.

When I enquired, my salad was whisked away and I was told they were making a new one. The new one had anchovies and sundried tomatos (yay), another chilly poached egg straight from the fridge (boo), and twice as much dressing and twice as many dubiously salty croutons. Not what you want or expect for nearly $20.

On the upside, the service at the Wintergarden Pavilion was fine, and apologetic once the salad mistake was pointed out. The toasted sandwich and lamb salad my companions ordered were unobjectionable. But the food felt too pre-prepared or pre-packaged for the price and style of the cafe. It's not that hard to get a Caesar salad right, or to freshly poach an egg. We left without coffee or sweets. A disappointing food experience.

I am sorry to say that my parents and I had a very similar experience on Sunday to liltgerkins review a month earlier. The food was barely warm, and the eggs partially raw. We had the distinct feeling the meals were pre-prepared and then microwaved (apart from the raw egg part which left us puzzled). On a positive note, the coffee was good. After talking to the waiter about the raw eggs he comped us 1 coffee - however this did not really go far to compensate for 3 substandard meals at around $17 each.
Sad to see that nothing has been done about the food here since the last bad review. A real shame for such a lovely iconic location.

We went for a late breakfast one Sunday unfortunately my Eggs Bene was completely cold (including the slightly burnt muffin). The eggs of the German style breakfast were partially raw. Then to top it off we found a hair under some of the German Breakfast at the end. Apart from those few things it could have matched the coffee and been really nice.
The worst part was that the manager did not want to come out and apologise and when he did he told us that the hair may have been ours or it could have blown into the food because we were sitting outside. All we wanted was an acceptance that the food was not up to standard. Perhaps a course in customer service would be a good idea.

Dear Liltgerkins, thank you for your feedback. We are very concerned to read about your experience. Our aim at the Wintergarden Pavilion is for our customers to experience great food and service every time, and if it is not up to expectations we like to rectify that immediately. Obviously on this occasion this did not occur and we apologise for this. We would like to discuss this further with you, so please email us at enquiry@wintergardenpavilion.co.nz (attention, Andrew) and we will be in touch personally. Thank you. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Nicola (Owner - Wintergarden Pavilion - Report

We stopped in for a coffee on a busy Mothers Day. The coffee was great and it was very pleasing to see the refurbished cafe becoming popular. I will be back!

Decided to grab a quick lunch at the cafe in the Winter Garden Pavilion and was actually really surprised in how good it was! Definitely recommended!!
