My partner and I had dinner at Totara Restaurant last Thursday. What a great way to kick off the long Easter weekend. We had the hamhock terrine and hapuka brandade for entrees. Both tasted great although the toasted bread with the terrine was slightly charred. For mains we had the duck confit which was absolutely divine: crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and such a great balance of sweetness thanks to the kumara and cherries. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was cozy. The wine was quite over-priced, so if you're looking for something affordable, your choice might be limited. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our night and I would definitely recommend Totara let alone go back for some more of that duck confit!
I have been waiting a long time to go to Totara restaurant. So a couple of weeks ago, some girlfriends and I finally went. It was incredibly overpriced and underwhelming. The service was below parr (The Maitre D was uninterested and our waiter had no idea about the menu at all). At the end of our meal, we waited so long for our tables to be cleared my girlfriend cleared it herself and put them onto another table. Only to be abruptly informed that was indeed a clean table, to which she replied not my problem. A side note the interior could do with an upgrade.........it's 2011
Wonderful experience. Food exceptional. Gracious hosts - new owners doing justice to the reputation of the restaurant. Highly recommended.
Martin.
Headed to Totara in Albany last weekend and had a great meal - the decor is nothing to write home about but the service was efficient and the food fantastic. Definitely recommended.
A truly superb dining experience. The service is excellent - very personal and the waiter really knew what he was talking about with the wines without being snobbish. The food is first-class and reasonably priced.
My Husband and myself have been coming to the Totara for years. Food always exceeds expectations! The two owners are in a league of their own for service and good humour!
Totara is another hidden gem and worth travelling to as you will not regret it!
best food, best service, best wine list and good prices. forget the central auckland restaurants, this place is where you will get the best of everything. Chef Peter Jackson (award winner of the Beef and Lamb Halmark of Excellence for 10 consecutive years - and this year, an NZ Beef and Lamb ambassador) will not dissapoint you!
We went to totra for Valentines last night but left before eating, we just paid for our drinks. The Podgy little guy was so arrogant and was very mad when I requested no eggplant with my lamb, when we asked for a min to make our minds up on something else, we were told "No! we're very busy, make your mind up now".
I know there food is good because my mate is the chef (who apologized about the service) and he cooks for us often at home.
We were shunned off as if to say "Dont like what's on the menu, dont eat here, we have enough good reviews". Well here is my bad review thanks!
