What great customer service! Pizza was very tasty. It's been way too long since our last visit... Three kids later. We will be back again soon. Highly recommended

Tonino's Pizzeria in Mission Bay has fallen so far below standards. It was a real waste of money and time dining here.

Firstly, the food.
Was worse than mediocre. While edible, the food was tasteless and lacked flavours. No garlic flavour in the the garlic bread and mains were just flat. I do not usually add salt to my meals, but the food was so under-seasoned that liberal use the salt shaker was required.

Then, there was the spaghetti marinara. Oh, how wrong that went. The seafood was stale and fishy. I could smell my fellow diner's dish from across the table! (okay, small table... but still??). Tasted worse. 3/4 went unfinished.

Then, came the service.
The waitress that served us was initially neither cold, nor particularly warm or friendly. She seemed to have an air about her, but one couldn't be sure.

But oh, how things changed the moment we mentioned to her how stale and fishy the spaghetti marinara was. Her first defence was, "It is marinara...it's seafood..."

I think my fellow diner was well aware of that when she ordered her dish. It's not our first time having marinara, mind you. The arguments continues before the waitress huffs off to the kitchen to pass the message onto the chef.

The chef then approaches us. Again, more defensiveness and not a word of an apology.

I move to pay and leave this very dissatisfying meal behind in some repressed portion of my mind.

As I hand over an Entertainment book voucher, I am curtly informed that it's Mother's day and they don't accept vouchers. Fair game. I say, "that's fine" and hand over my credit card. But the waitress continues to argue (not sure why) and offers to show me the rules. Unsure why as I'd put up no arguments about the voucher.

If I could give no stars to Tonino's, I would. Such an unpleasant meal leaving (literally) a bad taste in our mouths. It's uncomfortable writing bad reviews, but I think I'd feel worse if I didn't forewarn people about a possible experience as ba

Tonino's has been around for 30 years which is amazing - hopefully it wont be around much longer.

The service is by far the worst we've encountered - a 1/4 busy restaurant and the waitress takes 20mins to serve us and then another 15 to come back with our drinks and we never see her after the meals are plonked down.

The food is only slightly better - the pasta was cooked OK (any idiot can cook pasta) but the sauce was most likely Dolmio on a bad day. We also had a risotto which was too salty and barely edible.

We also recommend you encounter the proprietor - he was chatting away to his friends on the table next to us the whole time. When he came to finally sort out the bill, he repeatedly mumbled derogatory comments about us - it took us 4x of his unprompted comments for us to understand what he said!

Wish we could give it 5 negative stars! Even the Burger King next door has better food and service!!

Tonino's Pizzeria on Tamaki Drive is a Mission Bay institution. This place has been around for over 30 years; over 20 of them with the current owner and chef, Salvatore.

Put simply, you won't find a more authentic, better tasting Italian pizza in Auckland. Awesome in the summertime as it's just opposite the beach (even better for a take-away pizza!).
