The ViewAuckland Review

Vibe

A cosmopolitan combination of polished concrete, funky banquettes, and rustic hessian cushions. Ask for an alfresco table under the shade sails for vineyard views and tuck into delicious small plates that are perfect for sharing.

Service

Friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, with extra points earned for supplying a raincoat and umbrellas to ease our arrival on a surprisingly wet West Auckland afternoon.

Highlights

The Japanese-influenced marinated squid with cucumber, shitake and pickled ginger ($16), and two superb plates of seasonal vegetables – asparagus in an egg, pinenut and herb sauce $12), and roasted beetroot with green beans, red onion, feta and walnuts ($12).

Most Surprising Dish

The market fish ($22) with snapper on a smoky prawn risotto. The subtle saltiness of black olive caramel with a white chocolate and coconut pannacotta ($11) is a delicate and intriguing dessert.

Drinks List

A smartly put together winelist showcasing many local vineyards including Westbrook, Kumeu River, and the adjacent Coopers Creek. Beer drinkers can choose between Hallertau’s Pale Ale or Lager on tap, or go all summery with their delicious Granny Smith cider.

The Bottom Line

Innovative small plates and shared dishes with a Mediterranean, Asian and Middle Eastern spin, all delivered with style and passion at one of Auckland’s best casual eateries. The Tasting Shed's Executive Chef Sara Simpson has previously worked at Clooney and her knowledge and flair underpins a great menu.

A Reason To Return

For The Tasting Shed’s next seasonal menu. Keep an eye on the website around February-March apparently. Before then, I may well be going back for the Spanish-style lamb and pork meatballs ($15).
