Our wine choices were the citrusy Odyssey Gisborne Chardonnay and the nicely dry Wild Earth Pinot Gris from Central Otago. A concise and well-chosen selection of Kiwi craft beers combines with Italy’s Peroni lager.
Highlights
Risotto with ham, peperonata and parmesan, and a bowl of silkily smooth tagliatelle with gurnard and marscapone. Entrée-sized at $18 – perfect for lunch – or $26 as a main. Seasonally fresh asparagus were a great addition.
Most Surprising Dish
The chunky mozzarella and chickpea chips with tomato salsa. When every other table in the place has ordered them, they’ve got to be great.
The Bottom Line
Tucked away in the forests of west Auckland, The Refreshment Room is a cosy but cosmopolitan haven for well-prepared Italian food.
A Reason To Return
For more rustic Italian goodies from next month’s seasonally adjusted menu. In winter, the Scotch Fillet with herb butter and broken potatoes ($30) sounds like the perfect partner to a glass of red wine.
