The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
One of Auckland’s loveliest old homesteads – built 1877 – now houses the eclectic NZ collection of the James Wallace Art Trust, and an excellent daytime café. Take a break from admiring the $50 Million collection with brunch or lunch on the expansive wraparound verandah.
Service
Ordering is done at the counter, with follow up service to outside tables friendly and speedy.
Winelist
Small selection of Montana Wines and a few guest tipples from Pasquale Wines in the Waitaki Valley near Oamaru. Also licensed for beer.
Highlights
Great Eggs Benedict with nicely sharp Hollandaise sauce ($17.00), and the huge Big Breakfast with crisp potato rosti and gourmet sausages ($21).
Most Surprising Dish
The tasty and healthy Field Mushroom Gratin with goats cheese, a herb crust, micro greens and a balsamic reduction ($14.50)
The Bottom Line
An arty and laidback alternative to the usual round of café-jumping in Ponsonby, Parnell or Mt Eden.
A Reason to Return
To take more time to survey the stellar collection of contemporary NZ art. Don’t miss Sam Marshall’s Bowie-inspired piece in the entrance foyer. Upstairs there’s an ever-changing collection of sometimes quirky and challenging artwork.
