The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Particularly buzzy, in a mature, Devonport style. The courtyard area is very popular on a breezy summer afternoon, and expect large numbers of the silver-haired brigade (presumably residents) taking up possies indoors.
Service
In a word – inexperienced. On this particular visit not one staff member (of the three that served us) could advise us on the wine list – to be told that the only ‘knowledgeable’ person who could help was “too busy” is not exactly something that diners should be hearing three weeks after opening.
Winelist
Some interesting options, and with a bit more experience under their belts, perhaps the staff will soon be in a position to fully endorse said menu. The Chablis at $60 a bottle was very enjoyable although not quite as chilled as it should have been.
Highlights
The fish of the day (on this occasion Snapper and Tuna were on offer) will see hungry diners very satisfied with what must be some of the largest portions seen in Auckland restaurants for many a year. Presentation would see Ray McVinnie and the Masterchef crew in a head-spin, but taste is all there. Calamari also worth noting.
The Bottom Line
A welcome addition to Devonport’s dining scene which is undergoing a bit of a resurgence at the moment. The ample portions are certainly well received, and with a bill totaling $170 for two (entree, main, dessert each, bottle of wine and a beer), The Olive Press Bar & Bistro is certainly well priced. Service is far from ideal, but it’s early days yet.
A Reason to Return
The El Nino weather pattern is going to mean Aucklanders will endure some long, hot and still summer nights – perfect excuse to stake a position in the courtyard, order a few peronis and perhaps a few plates of Calamari and chips.
