I had an entertainment card voucher to use so decided to do this last sunday. We ordered the loaf with garlic butter and it was a decent size loaf but it was just warm towards cold than hot like you get at Lonestar.Out came our main and speaking for myself I ordered the steak and I never thought steak could go wrong really but it was a let down on the main altogether!!!I asked for the steak med/well but it was well done like rubber. The steak itself didn't seem to be a fresh cut of meat either. I had a thought because it was well done that perhaps that maybe the reason why the meat didn't seem fresh. Would be interested to know how old the steak meat was. I am sure Gordon Ramsey won't be impressed. The baby roast potatoes also was not a delight. The potatoes seem a few days old and just had been re-heated. It was very dry and didn't have that fresh cooked taste or texture to it.The dark gravy meat.... I have to say that they should really taste it for themselves and perhaps change it to red wine jus instead and or add to their menu as a sauce option.I didn't finish my plate as I was only eating for the sake of eating to finish it and but I decided that the meal was not good enough and had to stop.I will have to stick to dining at Squid Row, O'Connell St Bistro, Market Kitchen & Bar, Lonestar instead!Sorry Cardrona I had some form of expectations but this dining experience really didn't cut the mustard!

Went for a bite and some pints today, the beer is always good at speights, had a lovely new winter ale, extremely refreshing and the bar staff were more than happy to chat about the selection and talk about the beers, so all good there but the soggy fries and clearly frozen packaged deepfried seafood selection was rubbish, garlic bread was average and why when its cold outside are all the doors open,it was empty on a Saturday lunch which must say something about the food aye. Go for beers and staff but not food or a comfortable atmosphere.

Mixed bag – Had good and bad food at the Cardrona Speights Ale House
Pluses:– Friendly bar staff– Coal Creek Ribs were tasty
Minuses:– Shearers Shanks were the toughest we have ever had!– Broken tables with nails protruding– Maintenance is needed
Interesting:– Beer tasting tray is a good way to try a range of beers– Coal Creek Ribs were not on their menu last visit!– How can a manager allow damaged furniture for people to use/see. It looks terrible!
Verdict: – We will try again in 6-12 months

Average pub food - my salad was VERY average. Nice service except we were there on pub quiz night (Tues) so took away from the ambience. Normal prices. Would be great for a drink on a summers day or after work drinks.

Going to a pub one does not expect haute cuisine. One does expect the food to be of a reasonable standard, however. Galbraiths, just around the corner, is a prime example of great pub food at reasonable prices

Not so at Speights Cardrona. The fish special last weekend was inedible. Two large pieces of something unidentifiable obviously just out of the freezer on top of some bok choy

To charge close to $30 each was a monstrous rip-off

Of course being Speights the emphasis is on beer not wine but the wine list was dull and dominated by Australian wines

No way will we ever return here and I would advise anyone wanting pub food in this part of town to go to Galbraiths or the Horse and Trap
