The Mustard Kitchen, Morningside - Restaurant Review

The Food

The pies are the things that jump out at you for their homemade look. Though the Italian Meatball pie sounded awesome, I went for the Mexican Chicken. Bit of a mistake really – whilst the pastry was crumbly and golden, the filling was a real disappointment. I guess when I hear ‘Mexican’ I think fiery and full of interesting flavours – the only hint of a Mexican element was kidney beans, a dull flavour adding to a dull tomato sauce and small amount of chicken. Get some chilli and proper spicy salsa in here! Hell, even some sour cream! There are selections of interesting looking salads, and loads of biscuits, slices and muffins.

Drinks

A really good selection of juices, shakes and smoothies. I went for the Passion Banana smoothie with yoghurt and passion pulp. It tasted good, though was quite warm when I got it. Maybe some ice thrown in would help?

Vibe

Weirdly bare. There was little food on offer in the warmers and chillers (this was around 12:45pm), and one of the drinks fridges looks like it’s been boarded up… maybe it’s like this for a reason, but it all looks and feels a bit cobbled together. I like the post-it notes for signs though.

Service

Very friendly, and there are loads of staff. I was overcharged when I was there. Perhaps the use of an old calculator to tally up isn’t the best option…?

Highlights

A caramel and chocolate brownie that’s quite lovely.

The Bottom Line

I can see where they’re trying to go with this, and it seems like their hearts are in the right place. But there are a lot of elements that need some nurturing if this is to be a truly memorable neighbourhood café.
