I visited the Blue Breeze Inn for a late (8:30pm) dinner on a Saturday night for a friend’s birthday. It’s obviously very popular - extremely busy, full of people and the staff are hard to flag down and regularly seemed to get distracted and leave halfway through refilling water glasses at our table. We shared a number of small plates from the modern-chinese menu between four of us which just came out when they were ready, the highlights being the steamed prawn dumplings, wok-charred broccoli and the tea-smoked duck. Not a cheap night out but certainly one with really nice food!

We had our Work Christmas party at Blue Breeze Inn last week. I'd heard good things but to be honest the experience fell short of my expectation. Firstly the restaurant was so busy we had to stand to our neighbouring table get up and down, secondly it was so loud you could only hear the person next to you. The service was slow and food a mixed bag. The salmon main and bok choy were my picks. The chocolate dessert great but mandarin missed the spot.

My 2nd time to Blue Breeze Inn and its as popular as ever, this time on a Wednesday and it was packed as it was on the Friday we last went.

There were 14 of us again and so we sat at the same table and as we loved the shared eating experience of last time we decided to do it again. This time the menu had changed and still no soft shell crab.
Sticky pork ribs, crispy duck, spicy Bok Choy, a pickled-cabbage was so tangy it hits your taste buds. The Bang bang chicken was really “Bang bang”. My favourite was the sticky pork in the dumpling bun. I wasn't impressed with the beef shin with over cooked shellfish and too much liquid than anything. And not too fussed with the cauliflower with bacon. Great to see a new menu though.

I did try an rum elixir cocktail this time and it was lovely, much like a fruity caipirina.

This place is great and might become a regular haunt.

“Modern Pacific Chinese" reads the business card of the new Blue Breeze Inn. This restaurant is anything other than brilliant, because behind this latest addition to Ponsonby Central are two of the most talented people in the Restaurant business, chef Che Barrington and restaurateur Mark Wallbank. These two are the minds behind Moochowchow, their modern Thai eatery up the road, they mix authenticity with originality. What we call 'Asian fusion'.

The design is unpredictable and takes any notion of what we might typically think of as "Pacific-themed", the feel is more Hawaii or Tahiti and the music too. A huge neon tiki draws your eye down the length of the partitioned dining room and a bank of coconuts separates the kitchen from the bar, stunning hanging lampshades, heavy wooden furniture. It really does feel (if the weather was balmy) that you were at an island retreat.

There's booth seating sporting plush teal velvet upholstery, solid bar stools that swivel at a kitchen counter, a huge communal table that my group of 14 dined at, smaller tables for cosy twos and colourful padded seating outdoors for the brave.

Spicy chicken filling is encased in a light and crispy shell in the fried chicken dumplings. A pickled-cabbage was so tangy it hits your taste buds. The Bang bang chicken was “Bang bang”. The bowl of Shitake, Oyster & Enoki mushrooms was delightful as was the twice cooked crispy duck. We were all so gutted when one of the things we wanted to partake, the stir-fried paddle crab alas it was sold out. The braised crispy pork ribs that are sticky with wasabi caramel and pickled red dates was amazing, the favourite of the night.

So much was happening that all I could think of was ordering wine rather than trying the amazing cocktails I had heard of, so thats on my list for next time. This was one of the most exciting dining experiences I've had. It's out of the ordinary and leaves you head-over-heels in love with eating out.

On Saturday night, having had a few drinks and deciding we would chance getting a table at the new kid on Ponsonby Road. We were pleasantly surprised when greeted by a super friendly maitre who had a wee look and seated us at the "chefs table". Which is perfect for sitting up at the counter and checking out the busy kitchen crew. We started with a stunning bottle of Gruner Veltliner priced at a reasonable $50 a bottle. The restaurant was buzzing and rightly so. It looks amazing and had a great vibe. Food wise we tucked into BBQ pork buns which were divine. At $8 each not exactly cheap but running at the same price as sliders are across town. The Bang Bang chicken was a stand out. Half Crispy Duck was a great modern take on the more tradition Chinese version. So much great eating. The only thing I wouldn't re-order is the Crab. But that is because I am lazy and it requires a bit of work. It still tasted great. For of us ate well for $205. And that included two bottles of the wine I mentioned. So $50 a head is a bargain in my mind. Would I go back? I'm taking a girlfriend from Queenstown for lunch this Friday!

I visited the Blue Breeze Inn on Mothers day for a gorgeous lunch with my sisters. On one of the busiest days of the year and we still couldn't fault it. The attentive service was wonderful while we sat in the sun soaked stylish surroundings. The Décor totally rocks and is also super comfortable - we were there for over 3 hours.
Ordered Fried Spicy Chicken Dumplings, Bang Bang Chicken and Five spiced Smoked Chicken. All the dishes where mouth watering delicious and went together perfectly. The waiters are on hand to help you decided on the perfect mix of dishes which really makes a difference.
The Bang Bang Chicken was my favourite and I will definitely be back very soon to enjoy it again.
The restaurant is designed in such a clever way that it would be perfect for a romantic date or a large group of friends out together.
Head along and enjoy I totally recommend it.

I went along with a group of friends last week 10th May 2013, and we thought the food, drinks and service at the Blue Breeze Inn were exceptional. The braised beef shin and the pork ribs are stunning dishes, and if you like Peking style duck, then don't go anywhere else - the Blue Breeze Inn serve this up as an absolute tasting treat. My friends also raved about the dumplings, while I enjoyed the smoked fish taster to start.Service was slick and I felt it was excellent value. You'll see me there as a regular. I could not find any fault - loved it. Well done Blue Breeze Inn!!! Yum...
