The Best Tasting Menus
Sometimes you just want to go to a restaurant and forget about what it might cost you. Well, if you’re either reckless or rich, that is. The best tasting menus enable you to do just that, and whilst most are excruciatingly expensive, others are actually surprisingly affordable. Whichever you choose though, tasting menus offer you the chance to enjoy the very best dishes and the very best indicator of what a restaurant is all about – and of course the unadulterated joy of being lavishly, grotesquely greedy.
SidArt
Level 1, Three Lamps Plaza, 283 Ponsonby Road, Auckland, 1010
Art on a plate, Sidart’s tasting menu is simply stunning – you will not want to disturb the perfection on your plate… but of course you do and the tastes are fabulous. Expect interesting flavours such as liquorice, gingerbread and mandarin. For a shorter menu, we highly recommend the 5-course Friday lunch – amazing value at only $50.

Cocoro
56A Brown Street, Auckland, 1010
Cocoro’s degustation menu is entitled ‘Omotenashi’, or ‘to entertain guests wholeheartedly’. The concept of a Japanese degustation is a wonderful idea and Cocoro rivals Sidart in the artistic stakes. The courses definitely have a seafood leaning, though any tasting menu with karaage chicken gets a rather large tick in our book. It’s great value (9 courses for $85), and you can also match sake with your dishes.

Sid at the French Cafe
210 Symonds Street, Auckland, 1010
Award after award, review after review, The French Café has maintained meticulous standards of dining and service, and their Tasting Menu is as elegant as the restaurant itself. The 7-course tasting menu currently starts with the intriguing Flavours of Winter, and features ceviche, lamb with figs and an egg yolk confit. For stunning food matched with exquisite service, The French Café is hard to beat.

Clooney
33 Sale Street, Auckland, 1010
No one does tasting dishes of meat quite like Des Harris, the executive chef at Clooney. The beautiful dark surroundings at Clooney make the perfect location for a 7-course tasting menu that reads like a stripped-back list of gorgeous ingredients, all of which come out beautifully plated and very much to savour. Happily (and uniquely?), there is also a full vegetarian 7-course tasting menu available alongside the standard one.
