The Best Sushi Restaurants
Sushi and sashimi certainly polarise opinion, with those that love it coming over just a little evangelical about it, and those that aren't fond often completely failing to understand it. We love it though, so please prepare for a love-in with evangelical undertones. Here's our list of what we think are the best sushi restaurants in Auckland, so take a look and tuck in.
Bian Sushi and Donburi
Shop 2, 33 - 45 Hurtmere Road, Auckland, 0630
Bian Sushi is a darling of much of Auckland's print media, consisting enjoying the top billing in a heavily competitive sushi market - we can only but agree! The approach at Bian Sushi is to serve yourself from the array that’s laid out on the compact front counter. Expect a much wider range than at your local shopping mall sushi emporium. More adventurous palates can dive into the flying fish roe or creamy lobster salad varieties. If that sounds too scary, the Maguro nigiri, or raw tuna, comes as a super fresh chunk around 2cm square. The Tataki nigiri (seared beef) is also great, and because of ongoing demand the sushi is always super fresh.

Tokyo Club
Ponsonby Central, 4 Brown Street, Auckland
Little Tokyo in the heart of little Ponsonby. This popular “Yokocho” styled bar is a Ponsonby Central hotspot during both the day and night. Deliciously fresh ingredients make lunch time visits most keenly awaited - our advice, try the 'Tekka' Tuna roll - you will not be disappointed in the slightest.

Ichiban Japanese Restaurant & Pub
17 Albert Street, Auckland
Ichiban is a no frill eatery that is both cheap and cheerful - quite frankly, combinations we like. They make some great ramen, but on weekdays their pre-packed sushi is great for lunch on the run.

Hana Sushi
596 Great North Road, Auckland
Immensely popular Grey Lynn sushi spot where the currency is great flavours and business is booming - you'll need to get there early however as these bad boys don't hang around come the lunch rush.
Sushi Pac
11 Customs St West, Auckland
A staple of many downtown workers weekly eating schedule, Sushi Pac has been serving the tastebuds of Auckland diligently for over three years now and their commitment to quality fresh ingredients at decent prices shows no signs of abating. Standard offerings available but the more adventurous might like to take a gamble on the salmon and pumpkin...let's just say it's an acquired taste.
Tokyo Bay Takapuna
The Strand, Auckland, 0622
Another Takapuna talent, you can't help but feel enamoured with Tokyo Bay. The seaside setting, Asahi by the jug and some of the best sushi/sashimi combinations you'll find this side of Ginza will have you coming back for more, and more, and more.
