The Best Suburban Cafes
Central Auckland is packed with amazing and exciting cafes. But there’s more than a few exciting café options outside the city fringe. Here’s our pick for the best of the burbs.
32 Rua Road, Auckland
Friends recommended this Glen Eden café, which is tucked away off the main roads and it’s a gem! Bright, airy and with great atmosphere thanks to the open kitchen, we were seriously impressed with the coffee, service and amazing counter food (the plum and oat slice is a-ma-zing). Go!

Little & Friday
43C Eversleigh Road, Auckland, 0630
The most famous thing about Eversleigh Street before The Block came along, Little & Friday has created an amazing reputation for itself as the example of how a suburban café should be done. Cuteness mixed with excellent service and phenomenal baked goods. Our only problem – it’s getting way too popular.

Ruby Red Cafe
30b Coronation Road, Auckland
Sleepy Mangere Bridge is lucky to have this cute little café snuggled in amongst the standard block of suburban shops. Owned by food writer Amanda Laird, the highlight here is the famous mince on toast (complete with egg), though we were fans of the mushrooms on our visit. Delicious Miller’s coffee too.

Urban Soul
652 Great South Road, Manukau, Auckland, 2104
A lovely bright pocket of loveliness in amongst a pretty dull Manukau shopping block, Urban Soul does a great coffee, and has a delicious range of counter food on offer. We’ve yet to try out the menu, but from what we’ve seen, we’re looking forward to. Nice green and white styling too – very fresh and vibrant.

The Tannery
44b Portage Road, Auckland, 0600
What used to be the Kohu Rd Creamery is now The Tannery, and whilst the menu’s been stripped right down, we reckon it’s better than ever. Delicious Mt Atkinson coffee and Best Ugly Bagels are the order of the day, along with some great sweet treats and of course Kohu Rd icecream. Great service and an awesome space in the middle of industrial New Lynn.
RAD Cafe
367 Mount Eden Road, Auckland
As if calling Mt Eden your local isn't rewarding enough, with the addition of RAD locals have even more reason to celebrate. One of View New Zealand's finds of 2014, RAD cafe sets the benchmark when it comes to hospitable staff and delicious coffee. You can see why Mt Eden is such a tightly-held suburb!
