The Best Steaks
Medium rare, well done or blue - whatever your steak preference, whether you like high-end dining or relaxed bistro, there are many great steaks out there in Auckland. Here are our favourites:
The Grill by Sean Connolly
SKYCITY Grand Hotel, 90 Federal Street, Auckland, 1010
Sean Connelly’s fabulous addition to the Federal St restaurant strip looks the business, and the food matches it. The steaks here are just outstanding, our particular favourite being a shared black angus sirloin, with a red wine jus. The potato gratin and green beans with goats cheese and torn mint are a great accompaniment.

Jervois Steak House and Saloon
70 Jervois Road, Auckland, 1011
Something of a stalwart now, Jervois Steak House has been going strong since 2006 and its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning. Their steaks, part eye fillet and prime rib are wonderful, but if you can afford it the Blackmore Wagyu fillets are something else entirely.

Prego Restaurant
226 Ponsonby Road, Auckland
We know people who have been many times to Prego and only ever ordered the chargrilled eye fillet with port wine jus, and we can see why - it’s fantastic. We also love the scotch fillet with beetroot and veto puree, and Peroni onion rings. To accompany, the sautéed asparagus with lemon is a must.

El Sizzling Chorizo
Ponsonby Central, 136-138 Ponsonby Road, Auckland, 1011
Argentinian steaks have a flavour all of their own, and the meat on offer at El Sizzling Chorizo is up there with the best we’ve tasted. This truly is a meatlovers paradise, the hot charcoals roaring with dripping fatty juices. The steaks are served up on wooden platters, and you dig in. Our suggestion - the savannah sirloin with deep feud potatoes and a bottle of Argentinian malbec.

The Engine Room
115 Queen Street, Auckland, 0620
The Engine Room has many iconic dishes that regular go back for again and again, and their steak frites is one of them. Beautifully cooked marbled scotch fillet accompanied by crispy shoestring fries and homemade butter, it’s a stunner. Best accompanied with a side of green beans and almonds.
