The Best Italian Restaurants
When many people think of Italian food they simply think: pizza and pasta. Which is obviously madness - Italian cuisine is one of the richest and most diverse of all, and Italian people are quite rightly very proud of their culinary heritage. Here are our thoughts on some of the best Italian restaurants in Auckland that showcase Italian food as it should be: delicate, beautiful and passionate.
Poderi Crisci
205 Awaawaroa Road, Awaawaroa Bay, Auckland
Waiheke’s Italian shining star constantly makes the Best Of lists each yeah, and its not surprising to see why. A small but perfectly formed menu has many great dishes to choose from, but we suggest the ‘Trust The Chef’ menu - 4 courses with matching wines for $110. We can’t wait to go to their “Sunday Long Lunch’, which last for 4 hours.

Non Solo Pizza
259 Parnell Road, Auckland, 1052
A stalwart of Parnell’s dining, NSP has fantastic Italian food and a wonderful outdoor area in which to eat it. Their seafood risotto, chock full of prawns, mussels, cockles and calamari is superb, and their fiorentina steak is deservedly famous. Long lunch on a sunny day? This is your place.

Gusto at the Grand
90 Federal Street, Auckland, 1010
Sean Connolly's latest Auckland venture is already proving to be quite the haven for diners in search of authentic, rustic Italian cuisine. His methodology is simple - uncomplicated, traditional fare served in a relaxed environment - but if a truly exceptional experience is called for, book the Chef's Table - you won't regret it.

Toto's Italian Restaurant
53 Nelson Street, Auckland, 1010
Toto is the king of high-end Italian in Auckland. Chef Sergio Maglione has put together a stunning menu of ‘classics done well’, all of which is quite reasonably priced considering its reputation. We’ve done a degustation here and it was something very special. There’s live opera on Saturdays though you have to book early. Want somewhere a bit more rough and ready - head downstairs to the pizzeria for some of the best pizzas in the city.

Pane e Vino
20 Williamson Avenue, Auckland, 1021
Scruffy, noisy and a bit chaotic… and we love it! A huge menu of fresh pastas, pizzas and classic Italian dishes… we recommend the gnocchi and the white base pizzas. There’s no overpriced food interrupted by shirtless waiters here! And best of all, it’s BYO. Best with a group of friends and the wine flowing.

Prego Restaurant
226 Ponsonby Road, Auckland
There’s a very good reason why Prego’s been around for so long - the menu is solid, full of classic dishes and the food is consistently good. Start with the steaming baked bread loaf, share some of the fabulous calamari and feast on the oven baked whole snapper or seafood linguine. They’ve got a knockout tiramisu as well.
