The Best Fish and Chips
Fish and Chips will never go out of fashion - at least you'd hope not, as a good fillet of fish and chips should always be one's most guiltiest of pleasures. There are some great chippies all across Auckland but there are also plenty of impressive versions at restaurants too, so have a gander and start to look forward to Friday even more.
200 Jervois Road, Auckland, 1011
The newbie on the scene, and already up there with the best. FishSmith on Jervois Rd is producing some stunning fish and chips – the fish is enormous, chunky, and has a lovely light golden batter. Even better are their side options, particularly their fish pie croquettes. A must go!
Mt Eden Village Fish Shop
438 Mt Eden Road, Auckland, 1349
The long-time champion of the Auckland fish and chip scene is still holding its own after many years of very happy customers. Chunky fish, perfectly cooked chips and easy on the oil – no greasiness here. The kumara chips are outstanding, and we’re fans of their burgers as well.
Fish Fish
Ponsonby Central, 136 Ponsonby Road, Auckland, 1011
Tucked into the market section of Ponsonby Central, Jimmy the Fish not only sells fresh fish to take home, but does a fine line in fish and chips also. Their fish is battered in Lion Red beer batter, and you can also grab spaghetti and cockles and fish finger sandwiches there too.
Fish Market Wynyard Quarter
Auckland Fish Market, 22 Jellicoe Street, Auckland, 2121
It’s not rocket science that the fish you get at the Auckland Fish Market tastes extremely fresh. That’s because it’s probably only just been caught. We’re big fans of sitting in the courtyard with their freshly cooked fish and chips, a pint of beer and lazy Sunday afternoon music.
Oceanz Seafood
East Coast Road, Auckland
Multiple winner of the best chip shop in New Zealand, this Silverdale outfit is a hit with the locals, and obviously also with the judges! Really good prices and a great array of seafood options if it’s not one of the 5 types of fish you’re going for. They’ve got a great selection of fritters too, including whitebait, paua, scallop and mussel.
