The Best Breakfasts
Ah breakfast… one of the joys of the day. Be it as simple as a smoothie or as hearty as the full cooked, here are some of the best places in Auckland to start the day right.
Ima Cuisine
57 Fort Street, Auckland, 1010
With it's Mediterranean /Israeli inspired flavours and some of the friendliest hosts you're likely to find, Ima cuisine has long been considered top dog amongst Auckland's ethnic eateries. The breakfast menu is only available on weekdays, with mouthwatering highlights including Shakshuka, Blintzes (for the sweet tooth) or go all out and head straight for Ima's infamous grill.

The St Heliers Bay Cafe & Bistro
387 Tamaki Drive, Auckland, 1071
Quite apart from its super location, what makes St Heliers Bay Café & Bistro stand out is its innovative breakfast selection. Yes there’s the eggs bene if you so desire, but why choose that when you could sample smashed eggs with brussel sprouts? Or mushrooms with lemon and parmesan? Or tapioca and oat porridge with pumpkin and honey? We love cafes that step away from the norm, and these guys do it well.

Catroux Cafe
129 Westend Road, Auckland, 1022
Tucked away in Westmere, Catroux on a sunny day is hard to beat. Their breakfast menu is nice and diverse, with everything from a prawn and feta scramble to kumara and sage rosti. A big shout out for their organic mince on toast, which comes with sour cream and lovely chunks of chorizo. Oh and absolutely have hot cross buns for breakfast here at Easter time – unbeatable!

Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar
SKYCITY Auckland, 86 Federal Streets, Auckland, 1010
You have but three breakfast menu options at Depot, but they’re all brilliant. On the surface, our favourite sounds a bit boring, but Depot’s handmade muesli with poached rhubarb is the business. The bacon and egg doona is greasy in the best of ways, and the beignets come with the most incredible lemon and passionfruit curd. You’ve also got a great selection next door at Fed Deli, but Depot wins out for having espresso coffee!

Bread & Butter Bakery and Cafe
34 Westmoreland Street, Auckland, 1021
Weekend brunch time can be a little manic at Bread and Butter, so we’d recommend getting here first thing in the morning. A lovely bright open space, Bread and Butter has a fabulous breakfast menu, our favourite being the smashed avocado and poached egg on ciabatta. Also a fantastic array of freshly baked goods too, the pastries being particularly delicious.

Atomic Coffee Roasters
420C New North Road, Auckland, 1021
For so long we visited Atomic just for the coffee, but recently our eyes were opened to the great little breakfast menu they have on offer. A recent favourite dish of ours was a ham hock breakfast salad, and their thyme and parmesan hotcakes sound like a winner. Being a coffee hub, you also won’t be lacking for coffee options. Our favourite – one of their origin roasts siphoned to perfection.
