Orakei Bay Village has recently opened in the building that was the Tile Warehouse for many years. It’s a great use of the space and so tastefully done. The main tenant is Faro’s. There are also 3 other establishments – Ampersand, Brothers Beer and Bird on a Wire. You have to take a short cut thru Brothers Bear to get to the restaurant from inside the building otherwise it’s a bit of a walk if you don’t get a park right outside. Parking is at a premium up top so I found myself parking next to the train station and the Kings Plant Barn and a long walk up a very long set of stairs in your heels to arrive inside.

The Barnacle shares its kitchen with Brothers Beer with a fresh oyster bar which reminded me of the Depot, funny because that is where one of the Chefs comes from. We got a booth seat which most of the restaurant has, which made it quite private.

For dinner I had the Skirt steak which everyone else was not daring to try because they thought it would be tough and should only be the type of steak you use in a slow cooked casserole. I couldn’t imagine a place like this wouldn’t give you a respectfully cooked classy bit of protein. Well I was pleased when it arrived and I had my first mouthful – devine, soft, pink and perfect! The Anchovy butter was interesting and the eggplant puree, smokey. The Brussel sprout side was a very typical modern restaurant dish with bacon.

For dessert I had the Pumpkin pie which unfortunately for me was deconstructed. The Balsamic vinegar and strange white milk powder dust didn’t taste good on its own, but that was the point. Mixed all together with the cheesecake and pumpkin ice-cream it was pretty nice. But a slice of actual pie I would have enjoyed much more.

The service was great and it was a cosy enjoyable place I would definitely get back to. I hope next time I see some better signage from the other side of the complex.
