Te Whau Vineyard Restaurant, Waiheke - Restaurant Review

Vibe

Welcome to the restaurant with one of the best views in the Auckland region. Grab a spot on the balcony of Te Whau’s dramatic and stylish hilltop home and gaze back across the Hauraki Gulf to the Skytower, Auckland’s CBD and Rangitoto Island.

Service

Friendly and professional from owner Tony Forsyth and his concise team, with lots of support shown from his feline associates, Burmese cats Malbec and Merlot. They’ve got their lying in the sun and mooching around the balcony balustrade style pretty well sussed.

Drinks List

Te Whau’s own wines are excellent – especially “The Point”, their superb annual blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc – but the broader winelist also features some true New Zealand stars from other parts of the country. Highly recommended from our visit is the Framingham Riesling. If you’re really feeling flush, the international winelist features some legendary wines from France and Australia. Here’s your chance to sample a few from your “100 Wines to Try Before You Die” list.

Highlights

The delicate flavours of the entrée of kingfish tataki with miso and eggplant cream, pickled tomato, and a cucumber and mint sambal ($19.50), and the Asian-inspired main course of twice-cooked duck with oxtail dumplings, bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, cashews and a mandarin and duck jus ($41.50). Definitely leave room for the dessert specials of the day. On our visit the zingy coconut and lime cheesecake ($15) was a refreshing end to the meal.

The Bottom Line

Enjoying stunning views and featuring a relaxed but modern island ambience, Te Whau’s international reputation as one of New Zealand’s best vineyard restaurants is definitely well-earned. Say hi to Merlot and Malbec for us.
