I have been to Tatsumi twice and both times the food and service has been outstanding! From the minute you walk in the staff are all very friendly and attentive.

Both times we ordered a degustation menu, the first time was around Christmas and we had an 8 course dinner. The portions of food was very generous and the attention to detail was amazing. Every item placed on the plate was made perfectly and the flavors were delicious!

The second time we had a 9 course lunch. Again the food and service was impeccable. It was a Saturday so they were pretty busy but we never had to wait long for our food to arrive. Again it was definitely a meal to remember. The highlights were the braised pork belly which just melted in your mouth and the dessert was fantastic too, creme brulee ice cream!

If you want to try some delicious food with great service in a great location you must try Tatsumi.

We stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant a couple of months ago just looking for a light meal and settled for a scallop entree - they were right up there with the best scallops Ive ever had. The whole experience at Tatsumi was so good we had to return, on the basis of the first visit wetting my appetite this time it had to be the degustation menu. The meal was just delightful, great variety, subtle and full flavours, the portion sizes were perfect we had a good amount of each dish and at the end of the meal could not have wanted for more. So the food was just great - superb actually - but a restaurant is more than merely the food.
The setting was warm, welcoming with a classy/relaxing edge. And definitely Japanese . The waitress's/front of house staff were also superb being v friendly, attentive , informative, welcoming and accommodating ( tweaking the degustation menu to suit the non meat eating preference of my wife ) We particularly enjoyed the quirky fun Asia zodiac themed cocktails. Price-wise - it was spot on , good quality food at an appropriate price
It all came together - a wonderful night out dining, we thoroughly enjoyed it and would absolutely recommend Tatsumi Modern Japanese Cuisine.

If you are looking for a quality Japanese restaurant with fantastic food and friendly service, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tatsumi.

Yes, it is a bit more pricey than some of the other Japanese eateries around town, but I think you get what you pay for since the fresh ingredients, deliciousness factor and presentation are great. We would come here again and are glad that it's moved into our neighbourhood.

I totally agree! First class price with average taste. Nothing special to mention and Not for us Japanese. You can find really good Japanese food elsewhere at the half of the price Tatsumi Modern Japanese offers. - Report

Interesting to see only one review from minakom and the others agreeing. Looks like a bit of a set up to try and bring down high quality Japanese food. Have dined here 3 times all were excellent quality and priced according to the quality food and service delivered.

If you want cheap, then dine in the cheap Japanese diners where the sushi rolls have been sitting around for hours. - Report

Excuse me, Rusty-never-sleeps, if you take my comment as "a set up", I sugget every users in this forum not to believe all the 5stars comments listed because those "are set ups". I am writing honestly what I felt about the venue and it is very disappointing for you to comment on me only because your opinion is different from mine. What I felt might be different from others and that is what reviewers are for , aren"t they? I just wanted to say what I paid at TATSUMI is not worth enough for the value what I ate. My review is based on my comapring with other well-known Japanese restaurants I ate in Auckland with good reviews by Metro or Cuisine.I am a Japanese and I know well about JAPANESE FOOD!!Or should I say that your review is the one which is "a set up"??? - Report

I do think "Rusty-Never-Sleeps" never know what an authentic Japanese food is. Otherwise he/she would not be fascinated with such a Japanese food Tatsumi provides.

I was Just flabbergasted my comment was said "a set up" whilst I recently enjoy writing a lots comment about Auckland's Restaurants.

I really hope "Rusty-Never-Sleeps" stop defaming things without ground.

My Cantab friends used to rave about Tatsumi with many saying it was one of the most consistently-good restaurants in Christchurch. With the trauma of the last 12 months I guess it is quite understandable that they would look to make the move elsewhere.
Some really interesting option on the menu, with my Tatsumi highlights being the beef sashimi and surprisingly, the desert being the Black Sesame Creme brulee - who would have known.
You'd be well pressed to seek Tatsumi out next time you are in Newmarket - show them your support and you'll be rewarded!
