The ViewAuckland Review

5 out of 5 strars

The proud people of our capital reckon “You can’t beat Wellington on a good day.” Maybe that’s true, but this is View Auckland after all, and we reckon it’s pretty hard to top Takapuna Beach on a good day. Especially when the tide is in, there’s not a cloud in the sky, and you’ve scored an outside table at the Takapuna Beach Café & Store.

Our securing of an alfresco space is due to some swift footwork as a few satisfied customers leave. The wait staff just take it in their stride, and three tables later they easily hunt us down with our coffees. It’s only midmorning on a Thursday – come along at the weekend and it’s really busy – but the Takapuna Beach Café & Store is still at least two thirds full. The owners also operate Café on Kohi, Parnell’s Rosehip Café, and the Richmond Rd Cafe back across the Harbour Bridge, and their many years in the restaurant industry shines in Takapuna. Service is casual but professional, ingredients free range and organic, and the coffee excellent. Prices are on the high side – you’re paying for the location as well – but that doesn’t stop regulars at the Kohimaramara café also heading north to dine at Takapuna.

Despite the contented bustle inside and outside, our meals are delivered in good time. I team poached eggs with a side of potato rosti and chorizo. The eggs are perfectly cooked and the gossamer light and freshly-made potato rosti a million miles away from the soggy processed hash browns dished up at other places around town. The meal is not cheap at $21.50 all up, but it’s worth it considering the location and quality. Carol’s Roast Portabello Mushrooms ($18.50) are equally good teaming thyme, and cream made from Grana Padana (an Italian cheese).

We’ve gone down the brunch route, but the menu is also equally strong on innovative lunch options. I make a mental note to return for the Char Grilled Squid with Piquillo Peppers and Coriander Tahini Paste, or the Rare Seared Tuna with Panzanella and Herb Salad. This close to the ocean it’s almost a crime to not have seafood. Back on the brunch menu, the Macadamia Nut & Seed Granola Bix with Poached Rhubarb and Greek Yoghurt also looks good for the rare occasions I order the healthy option.

In a town overflowing with some pretty ordinary cafes, the Takapuna Beach Café & Store really raises the bar. The focus is on great flavours delivered by passionate foodies, excellent service, and one of the best locations in town. The attached “Store” –think gourmet deli meets high-end ice cream parlour – is worth a look even if you’re not dining in.

The best of summer is yet to come. Make time for at least one visit across the Bridge to the Takapuna Beach Café & Store.
