Sunday Painters, Ponsonby - Restaurant Review

I interviewed the chef of Sunday Painters some time ago on her favourite dish, which was a Rabbit and Mustard pie. It was delicious, a lovely unexpected rustic dish. Therefore there were high hopes for what the kitchen had to offer on our recent visit for dinner. The menu that arrived didn't wow on the innovation front, but contained some good classic dishes. We started with the goats cheese fritters (more like balls) with a nice baby beetroot salad. These were fantastic perfectly fried with a just melted cheese oozing out of the thin casing. For mains, the lamb rump was very good accompanied by a fantastic beetroot gratin, a lovely change from the heavy cheesy potato version. The scotch fillet was ok, but with nothing that you wouldn't find in a good steak restaurant. The honey roasted pear and apple cobbler was a bit of a disappointment due to the extremes of flavour, the honey flavour overpowering the fruit and the sour cream ice-cream lacking any.

An extensive wine list broken down into New Zealand and French options (a lot of which is stacked in the impressive wine rack which divides the back of the room). We shared a bottle of the very nice Rippon 2011 Sauvignon Blanc.

Sunday Painters has always looked good with its light mint walls and rugged floor, and nothing's changed there. Is it just me or have the new owners crammed in more tables? It's not unpleasant, and actually fills to quite a nice atmosphere but does make it feel a little less charming.

Thorough, but without much spark. We were the first people to arrive so had two wait staff to ourselves for quite some time. With their slightly strange habit of standing watching us from the back of the room rather than busying themselves to make us feel at ease, it felt like you were eating your entrees in a scene from The Shining.

Those goats cheese fritters were quite something.

The Bottom Line

With a change in ownership, Sunday Painters feels like its lost a little of its charm. It's still a great space to eat in, but some more inspired dishes and friendlier staff are needed to match it.
