Sunday Painters Information
Sunday Painters is a dream realised by Isobel Thom and James Kirkwood, responsible for the kitchen and wine respectively, about opening a restaurant of their own after having communal dinners at their Sunday painting group meet-ups.
This Ponsonby restaurant had only opened in August 2010 but had garnered such immense popularity within months, thanks to their gloriously rustic food and beautifully paired wines - not forgetting also their friendly service.

A real pleasure to dine here. The food was delicious and well-presented, the wine superb, the decor attractive and different from the usual restaurant decor, and the ambience perfect. We enjoyed the art work of Kim Meek on the wall at Sunday Painters too.
Very disappointed, heard great things about Sunday Painters restaurant and was served with dry overpriced fish. Tables are insanely close together which makes for a very uncomfortable meal. However wine was great!
Fantastic french bistro in the heart of ponsonby. The best bit about Sunday Painters is the ambiance - they play vinyl for background music...exceptional!
really quirky but Sunday Painters has a charm all of it's own. My partner and I had such a wonderful experience there this week - I'll definitely be spreading the good word about Sunday Painters, one of Ponsonby's gems.
I've dined at Sunday Painters twice now and both times had a wonderful time. The little touches like the hand written menus, quirky decor and vibrant service with excellent wine knowledge make Sunday Painters one of the best Ponsonby restaurants I've been to in some time.
You'll need to book as Sunday Painters is a reasonably small space but I can definitely recommend this place.
Sunday Painters is awesome!! This is the best restaurant we've been to in a long time. Honestly couldn't fault it at all. The service was A++ from the wine expert to waiting staff. The food was excellent - recommend the beetroot and goat's cheese salad, also the steak and fish dishes were perfect. For dessert, the lemon cake was beautiful and so was the pear tart. All washed down with a delicious Chablis! If you want a really good dining experience then I'd recommend Sunday Painters.
We dined at Sunday Painters last night and had such a wonderful time. From start to finish, the whole experience could not be faulted in the slightest - for that reason alone Sunday Painters is very deserving of this 5 star review!
Read about Sunday Painters in the paper, headed along and thought it definitely deserved it's good press - quirky but cool.
Had heard (and read) great things about Sunday Painters so was really keen to try it out last week.
Initial thoughts were that the venue was really cool, and quirky - much like Queenies Lunchroom in Freemans Bay.
The wine list is one of the best yet - my girlfriend and I settled for Chabalis which was outstanding.
I had the Salmon as a first course - huge serving size - and followed this up by steak. Both were simply outstanding, but only bettered by the moreish chocolate mouse - OMG!
There is little doubt that we'll be visiting Sunday Painters a whole lot more!
