At the bottom of Khyber Pass is Sun World China. One of the best Yum Char joints I’ve been to and I think I am pretty good now at knowing what to avoid. Like knuckles or sinew (did I spell that hideous supposed Asian delicacy correctly)?!
What can I say, a lot of dumplings with either pork or prawn, spring rolls, spicy flat noodles and Prawn sticks. And yummy warm custard buns and egg tarts. I tried their ice cream balls for my first time and they were awesome. I always drink a ton of green tea which is great for washing down any grease.
A cheap lunch – a full belly for only $20.
Try to go during the week when it’s less busy as Sunday everyone seems to go with their families and the trolleys don’t come round fast enough.
Sun World in Newmarket is my local and one of my favourite Chinese restaurants. Sun World serves up great yum cha for lunch and really tasty Hong Kong style dishes. This restaurant is always crowded, even on weekdays, so I do recommend that you make reservations.
In terms of yum cha, the food items may not be as refined as restaurants such as Grand Harbour / Grand Park, but it definitely doesn't fall short in terms of taste. The great thing about this place is they don't give you a "time limit", where you have to vacate your table by a certain time. So, you can sit on for a bit to have a chit chat with your companions (or continue eating) without having to rush off. I still recommend that you either arrive early before the lunch crowd or make a reservation for yum cha.
I highly recommend this place for dinner too. They have a great selection of food and for a reasonable price. Great if you are dining in a big group.
Service is okay. Their wait staff are usually quite efficient and helpful in recommending dishes etc. When not too busy, the managers sometimes do engage you in friendly banter.
Sun World does offer 'private dining' as well as they are able to partition off parts of the restaurant. Perfect if you're wanting to have a larger family gathering in a private setting.
BYO wine available.
Parking around Newmarket can be challenging. Sunworld offers discounted parking to its customers for the Tournament car-park above the restaurant. I think it's just a couple of dollars ($3-4) in the evenings.
