High Tea at the Stamford Plaza designed by Michael Meredith was a great way to spend my Sunday lunch. I've had High Tea at the Langham and I think this rated a notch higher than the average offereings there. The ambiance was about equal and the service good at this lovely Hotel.

Out came 3 tiered platters with: Hereford beef, mustard & mayo sandwiches, Prosciutto & mozzarella open sandwiches, Citrus chicken with cranberry or Salmon mini bagels, curry puffs and the BEST scones ever with jam and mascarpone.

One of our group is Gluten Free and had similar offerings without the bagels or scones and with mini kebabs instead and gluten bread for her sandwiches. Apparently not as good as our lunch.

To finish: Opera cake, Macaroons, strawberry and champagne truffles and marshmallow. The marshmallow tasted like lavender soap. Like having your mouth washed out with soap. My only negative to the stand.

It was enjoyable and I would recommend popping along.

The high tea is served on a 3 tier stand with cool glass plates which decrease in size as you work your way up the stand. Starting at the bottom, the sandwiches I thought were very small and quite forgettable. There were four different flavours and yet they all tasted the same. We ordered one of the rounds to be vegetarian and they obliged except they just took away the fish and meat sandwich and added a lazy grilled aubergine and capsicum. The egg sandwiches were particularly disappointing as they didn’t seem to have any flavour at all.

The next tier up contained scones and a lone chicken curry puff, lone because the vegetarian option was to remove the puff and add an extra chocolate scone. A little disappointing as something different and more substantial would have been appreciated, it appears not much extra attention is paid to those dining vegetarian. The puff was tasty and as good as I had heard from a friend before I visited. The traditional scones were very good however the chocolate ones were glugy and not incredibly impressive.
Finally the top tier, the sweets. For so many high teas this is the main event as there is a real opportunity to be creative and show off. We were presented with six bite size sweets, the centre piece was two pieces of cake and then four different bite size desserts. The cake was visibly undercooked and still had a line of raw dough through the centre and I had a huge problem with the four desserts. Firstly they used prebought pastry cases on three of the four desserts, one or two I don’t mind but the problem, because you don’t get one each, to taste all of them you have to halve the bite sized desserts but the pre-made cases are solid and impossible to cut. The flavour wasn’t awful but again they lacked that little extra quality that is expected with high tea.

Overall I thought it was pretty disappointing, far too small and not a great deal of flavour. Although the service was good I was desperate for the food to match.
