If you haven’t been to Sri Penang you MUST. It’s the best Thai in my opinion round Auckland. Great value for the enormous portion you get. You’re guaranteed a doggy bag situation. The good old Chicken curry is lovely. I was a bit rushed on my one visit here so I am definitely going back and bonus its BYO wine. Ok so not much ambience but the place is heaving so a booking is a must. Get there now.
Love it at Sri Pinang! Cheap food, cheap corkage. Remember to book ahead. If you're vegetarian, make sure you ask if your chosen dish is vegetarian as "vegetable laksa" for example contains shrimp paste and you'll find 'em in there.
omg! just came from sri pinang and i am very satisfied. not only they serve the best curry roti but also provide a friendly and efficient service. food portions are huge and the price is little. sri pinang is highly recommended!
I'm Malaysian Chinese and Sri Pinang is the closest thing to home that I can find within the central city (crusty foodcourts not withstanding). For real Penang authenticity, try the various laksas or the fried (char) kuay teow, which they do brilliantly.
Sri Pinang is definitely a favorite and well worth trying out. Other than the fact that the food is delicious and very reasonably priced, the other key factor is service.
The reason patrons of the restaurant are so boisterous is the relaxed atmosphere and typically Asian kind and cheerful service without being over-the-top attentive. The restaurant owner is almost always there and we have grown to expect the kind of service where they ask how your family is doing next time you visit. For a reasonably priced BYO, definitely 5 stars.
Located next to a cabaret club on Karangahape Road, Sri Pinang guarantees a colourful night out, every time. With BYO corkage only $1 a pop, Sri Pinang is a favourite for group dinners. While the décor isn't as cheap and nasty as many BYO restaurants, it's not the plushest of spots either and probably not the best place to go if trying to impress first dates.
The food, however, is fantastic. Possibly the best Malaysian cuisine available in Auckland. A word of warning though - spicy means exactly that. The spicy squid could melt polar ice caps. The service is warm and friendly - even after the fourth bottle of wine - and the value is unbeatable. Dinner for eight, including starters, mains and corkage, worked out to be less than $20 per person. Fantastic! Be sure to make a prior booking as Sri Pinang is a well-known favourite throughout Auckland.
