Work mates and I went to try out this restaurant one lunch time. We decided to dine in after seeing the refurbished from what was Gina's old place.
The service at Sri Mahkota was excellent and the food was great, I had the vegetarian fried rice and spring rolls I asked for no eggs and no tofu, they asked if I was strict vegetarian which I said yes so they said sure we won't add the shrimp sauce.
The food came to $18 all up which was great and now we make Sri Mahkota a weekly visit.
We recently moved into the Upper Queen St, Symonds St area and were keen to try some of the local Malaysian & Thai restaurants. We phoned ahead to order some beef rendang & chicken rendang from Sri Mahkota on a Tuesday night. The food was ready to collect 15 minutes later. No complaints there. However at $18 each per main, we were disappointed to discover that no rice was included!! Upon trying, the flavours were bland and under-seasoned. My beef rendang consisted of large, VERY tough, dry & chewy pieces of beef. Rendang should be rich, fragrant, flavorsome and tender (oh, and served with rice) Mine certainly wasn't and both were almost cold.Overall, we felt pretty ripped off. Especially having recently dined at K.K Malaysian in Wellington, where the most expensive item on the menu is $12. And K.K's chicken rendang is INCREDIBLE.Sri Makhota: High prices for AVERAGE food. No thanks.. Won't be back.Sam.
Had lunch at Sri Mahkota's Symonds Street restaurant today. The food is as good as at its other sites. I had the chicken curry with roti which was delicious, while my dining partner had the beef rendang which she really enjoyed. The service is great and the restaurant wasn't too busy, but Sri Mahkota does get packed on a Friday for lunch.
Was pleased to see that this new restaurant in Symonds St was bustling the Saturday night we visited. Located in the old Gina's site, Sri Mahkota has been pleasantly refurbished for relaxed family dining.
The staff were really friendly. Food awesome. Partner had Rendang chicken which was thoroughly enjoyed. I had fish curry which was enough for two and was chocka with fish (bones and all), okra, ladyfinger and tomato
Wine and beer list a little on the basic side but they appear to have a BYO license so will bring my own next time. Mains were average $16-17 and the seafood ones $25-30 although the fish curry was huge and thoroughly worth it
Work locally to Sri Mahkota so planning to lunch there soon
Had the fish curry at Sri Mahkota the other day and it was divine! I've searched long and hard for good Malaysian restaurants in Auckland and now finally, with Sri Mahkota, I've now got a go-to!
