3 out of 5

It’s not often that inclement weather plays a major part in my dining decision making process however, after another flawed weather prediction from the TV 3 weather team, when Squid Row was mooted by one of my friends, all were in favour.

We’d spent our Saturday afternoon visiting a range of exhibits as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography, and weren’t really in the mood to traipse around the city looking for sustenance.

Squid Row was the logical choice – not only because of the food and relaxed environment, but because it possesses the best heating in the land! It has been open for well over six months now and it was great to see this Mt Eden establishment getting some good custom this particular Saturday night.

Our party of four made sure we were in a position to get full effect from the much-appreciated heating panels. The positioning also made for the best views of the surf themed vids in the place. The reflections of the heady days of surfing infancy were interesting – for the first 5 minutes or so.

It’s fair to say that when Hoegarden was spied, it certainly felt that we had lucked in. Although the Wine list is well appointed with a number of kiwi and international varietals, the flagship Belgian beverage ($7.00) was the popular choice amongst the majority, (a friends’ girlfriend, as she so often is, was the exception - opting for an interesting Amor-Bendall Unoaked Chardonnay from Gisborne).

The name Squid Row should leave you under no illusions as to the make up of the menu. Seafood lovers rejoice – there’s enough variety here to please most palates.

To start, we shared a Squid Row Tapas Plate ($38.00) – Calamari, Lobster, Prawns, Squid – all very fresh and plentiful and certainly worth the sum.

As a main, I opted for the Surf and Turf – at $25 reasonable however the steak was pretty paltry and the Garlic prawns were not much better. My partner went for the Laksa Mussels – generous portions however after a few samples (hey, that’s one of the perks of being in a relationship) I have to say I was disappointed with the bland nature of the sauce.

Our companions on the other hand were very impressed with their choices – the Linguini Pasta included an ample supply of calamari and prawns, and the Smoked Fish Pie looked just as pleasing.

As if competing, us boys both felt we could fit in desert. The Lemon Tart and Chocolate Pudding were ordered - and after seeing the satisfied expressions on our faces, the girls duly joined in. I couldn’t pass judgment on the tart, but the Honey Mascarpone complimented the pudding superbly.

If nourishing, uncomplicated food and a casual dining environment are on the cards, then Squid Row should tick all the boxes – just bring your sea legs.
