Stunning modern Japanese cuisine. The filo tempura scallops are to die for. Have dined here twice and both visits were exceptional. Can also highly recommend the seafood toban. On the pricey side, however definitely worth it for a special occasion. 5/5 and will be back.
This restaurant was magnificent, food was great ive never had such tasteful shashimi, we also got the toothfish wing which on the night was the special, it fed myself and my partner a bowl of rice was indeed necessary though, the waitress was also very pleasant that a tip was on the cards, the desert we tried was a 3 choice plater, which was also very tastefully done, i recommend this restaurant to anyone who goes, a 10 STAR for me
I have been to many Japanese restaurants, from NZ, and many places around the world, and this restaurant was unfortunately one of the worst encounters. As a metro winner for 'Best Japanese Restaurant', you would expect at least high quality food, if not outstanding. The sashimi was definitely fresh but the raw fish in the sushi was definitely not and the small fried pork cutlets that came with the set menu was a bit of a worry too. Nothing special in terms of food presentation and taste of sauces or food itself, as one would expect from an award-winning restaurant. In fact, a little boring I would say. The nicely worded list of ingredients given in the menu did not match the quality of the dishes. The only highlighting taste of the night was the ginger and vanilla cream brulee for dessert which had a unique taste and texture. Addtionally, the interior design of the restaurant was something to give credit for. Finally, the service was one of the most disappointing experiences, which lead to me having to write this review. Food took 45mins to 1hr to arrive at our table and on top of that the waitresses avoided coming to our table. Too many times we needed to call for attention just to get some water for the table. This is definitely one of the most important issues that needs improvement. I do not usually give comments online, however, since this is an award winning restaurant with many good reviews (as shown on this webpage), some honest evaluation needs to be mentioned. I do not plan to return to this place which is really disappointing as all the metro winning restaurants I have tried have been delightful. As with the other restaurants, I was looking forward to trying it out before telling my family and friends how great it was, but unfortunately this was not the case. Hopefully this unsatisfactory encounter would be the last of my dining experiences.
A great personable Japanese restaurant with a very high standard of food. Not your average Japanese and therefore slightly more expensive than others. On the night we went the service was OKAY. It seemed they forgot our main meal, but staff were very apologetic and gave us some endamme beans to tide us over, which was thoughtful. The wine list is also a little limited, but the food makes up for it. You'll more than likely need to book well in advance although we managed to walk in on a Friday night!
