I work and live in Kingsland and tried out Shaky Isles to be pleasantly surprised. I had the 'pig in a bun' and it was awesome. Free wifi and mean tunes always a bonus.
I've dined at both Shaky Isles Kingsland and the Britomart branch. each experience has been really good. Both locatiosn have a very different vibe about them. The Kingsland one is a bit more laid back, when i was there staff were laughing like crazy, service was friendly and the Crumpets with poached pear were delicious. My husband had a chocolate milkshake which he wolfed down with no complaints, followed by eggs ( can't remember how they were cooked - but he was impressed and he's been a chef for 10+ years ) while i opted for a mocha with a melting Whitakkers Bar in it. Yum
Britomart feels alot more City style, less laid back but still really great atmosphere. Awesome looking counterfood - big range of Baguettes and other savoury snacks. Will defo dine again.

I was excited to see a new cafe open in kingsland and from the outside and inside interior I already had high expectations of Shaky Isles. Sadly however pretty much everything about my experiences there have been disappointing. Firstly the service, the staff are too concerned with the tasks they are dong instead of taking care of the customers. For example standing at the counter waiting to pay for my food and having several people ignore you as you wait. Secondly the food, I ordered a iced chocolate which was the worst iced chocolate I have had in my life. It consisted of hot chocolate syrup at the bottom with milk and cream on top so the whole thing was warm and terrible. I wanted to order the waffles but the rude waitress told me "We don't have waffles" I looked at the menu thinking I'm sure I saw them on there and she followed with "Our waffle machines broken" it was so rude I should have just walked out then and there. The food portions are small and similar to something you could make at home if not better.
good food. good coffee. appalling service. everyone who works there looks depressed. There are plenty of other places with good food and good service. Good service makes all the difference, something most New Zealand restaurants haven't figured out yet. Get with it guys. I wouldn't even mind tipping for good service in this country.
