I just can’t keep away from Britomart. It's bordering on obsessive, as I struggle to keep up with the new openings, revisiting old favourites and watching all the elements click into place. Come the World Cup, this is going to absolutely rock. Late nights will become the norm, so it's good to see that there are more than a few options for the next-day remedy.

Shaky Isles sprung up in Kingsland 4 years ago with a retro kooky look. Favourite elements included the wacky strung-up lights and oh-so-diner yellow and red sauce bottles on the tables. I went there soon after opening and was impressed. For once, offbeat didn't equal bad service, which can hit so many cafes. I hoped therefore that the Britomart branch of Shaky Isles could keep this up.

It does and maybe even more so. Yes it's bigger and so maybe not as cosy as its older sibling but this means that you can get a seat when you want it on a busy Sunday morning. We rocked up reasonably late in the morning, and got a great table just near the big windows which let in loads of natural light. Admittedly, the view is Customs St, but you don't look outside here. There's more than enough to keep you occupied inside, be it the witty menu or the crazy coffee timeline snaking around the walls.

The food here may take a little time to reach you, but when it arrives it not only looks tasty, but is beautifully presented. My first reaction when my 'Isle Have It All' big breakfast was that it looked a bit small, but it was perfectly proportioned - we're talking kransky sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans, spinach, tomato and mushrooms, with a side of Turkish bread.

The other choice for our table was the bruschetta with grilled haloumi, avocado, tomato, coriander and lime. Fresh and a nice healthy alternative. Both were great. The coffees come in beautiful powder cups and saucers (never matching), and the smoothies we got to finish off were fantastic, the kiwifruit, pear, lychee and banana one a nice change from the usual.

My only slight niggle was the timings - on this occasion, it was fine to wait a wee while for our food and drinks but if you were on a schedule, it may leave you slightly panicking. Perhaps best to tell the staff if you're in a rush.

Shaky Isles along with Quay St Cafe are two great reasons to start the day off at Britomart. With weekend markets, great lunch options, BCC and Tyler St for late afternoon drinks, numerous restaurants for dinner and all the nightlife you could ask for, you may as well move there.

A Flat White costs: $4
