The ViewAuckland Review
Satya on paper sounds like it could be just another addition to the number of disappointing Indian restaurants in the Ponsonby area. Plonked just near the Newton Rd off-ramp and surrounded by second-hand furniture stores and car dealers, you could be forgiven for walking on by to something flashier around the corner.
On the other hand, it's got to be a good sign when your friends take you to an Indian restaurant that they've all been too only a week before. And it's good. It's really really good.
I can't really go into too much detail on all the dishes as amongst the 6 people at our table, all but one got the following, and I'd urge you to do the same: Entree - Dahi Puri (which originates from Mumbai, a fantastic bite-sized mix of potato, chutney and yoghurt); and Main - Murg Badami (we had the chicken option, a lovely moist dry curry bursting with flavour). Mop it all up with a garlic paratha (a thinner, more delicate alternative to naan).
Trust me, you won't need to move from this formula. If you do, no problem... it's all delicious but those two dishes really sum up Satya. They're refreshingly different, incredibly tasty and a great deviation from the usual Indian experience, which more often than not is sauce, more sauce and a minimal portion of meat.
Admittedly the toilet (singular) could do with a lick of paint and a makeover. If you have to queue, you want it to be nice. But if that's the biggest problem, then it's easy to accept when the food is so good. Grab a group of friends, head along and be merry.
One last thing: there are 3 branches of Satya South Indian around Auckland, but we'd definitely recommend Great North Rd over the others. Especially as the front door looks like the Tardis.
