Salvation Kitchen, Avondale - Cafe Review

You can't miss Salvation Kitchen. It's bright orange and looks like a petrol station (that's because it used to be one).

One thing's for sure - there's masses of it. It's all counter food and the selection is overwhelming. Every counter surface is covered with savoury and sweet treats, including a large number of vegetarian options. I went for the Chicken and Corn homemade pie with a Greek salad on the side. The pie was generous in size and very good for a standard chicken pie, though a little more chicken and a tad more flavour would have mode it perfect. The side salad was also good, but had about 10 olives to every other ingredient. I took away a zesty lemon slice for later. It certainly was zesty but unfortunately the base underneath was undercooked and dense.

Karajoz coffee which I had to order separately from the food. It was made very fast, but unfortunately was luke warm.

It's got lots of space and is bright (even on the overcast Saturday that I went). It could do with a few more copies of the Herald, and the stack of magazines on the big communal table need to be moved. They're a nuisance if you're sitting there, and you feel like you're intruding if you're having to get one when the tables full.

Friendly if a bit overly familiar. Apart from the coffee, there were a few stumbles in service. I was served the fish pie by mistake (it did give me a chance to have a bite of it - not bad). The correct one I ordered was brought over to the table quickly but I had to swap it over myself, the partly eaten fish one not cleared from the table by the time I left. No water offered.

The pies are big and at under $6 pretty good value.

The Bottom Line

Salvation Kitchen definitely has the quantity but is let down a little by the quality (both in the food and service). Yes, it's the best cafe in Avondale, though there aren't many other contenders. Focussing on a great overall experience rather than pumping out a massive variety of food may be all it takes to make this kitchen great.
