I went to Rosehip around lunchtime on a Monday for a coffee and lunch from the cabinet. The place was packed and the inside very noisy, but we managed to get a table outside. I thought the prices were quite expensive compared to some of the really great cafes I usually go to. The coffee was good and I really enjoyed the chocolate hazelnut cake we tried - heaps of ground nuts in the cake mixture and delicious chocolate icing. The sandwich was nice with nice chutney on the side. We enjoyed the food and it is handy if you are visiting the Rose Gardens, but I wouldn't make a trip to Parnell just to go to Rosehip.
It was a fine Autumn Saturday at 12 noon and the cafe was so busy we were told that we would have to wait for a table. So we decided to go elsewhere. Something must have changed to make it so popular because our alternate choice was a lot quieter!
We went here following a five star review in the Weekend Herald. Looking forward to great food and atmosphere the only conclusion we could come to was that either the owner and writer are friends, or money changed hands. To summarize:
good things: They served seperate hot water with a long black, as many cafe's fail to do.
Bad things: Said hot water was served 5 minutes before the coffee arrived.
The service was not great, the food substandard(we had the blueberry pancakes, French Toast Brioche and bacon with poached eggs.
One poached egg was runny the other hard boiled.
The bacon is the cheapest possible bacon that is 50% fat.
It was cold, wet and thoroughly unwelcoming.
We definitely won't be returning and would advise others to avoid. We shall never trust the Canvas Brunch Review again, it appears that the best scores come from local cafe's to the writer, which really shouldn't be a factor.
The place was packed on a Thursday lunchtime, but the service was excellent. Food well served, and well presented, and the double shot coffee had a real zing to it!
Definitely worth a visit if you are in Parnell, even if it is a short walk from the main street.
My husband and I drive over from the North Shore most Saturday mornings to have breakfast here, we love it!
Rosehip, opposite the Parnell Rose Gardens, is a fine example of decent café dining, though my one gripe is that the opening hours are a little on the ‘freestyle’ side of things – the place never seems to be open.
But, if you manage to arrive and they are open, then I certainly suggest you take a table and tuck into one of the more extravagant café menu around. Whether it’s a last Sunday brunch or a quick weekday lunchtime snack they’ll have pretty much something for everyone.
If you’re in Parnell Rosehip is definitely worth a visit.
The Rosehip Cafe, away from the hustle of Parnell high street, really is the perfect place to grab breakfast. The menu isn't huge but what they do offer is cooked to perfection and the service is always polite and efficient. I always go for the pancakes with bacon, fried banana and maple syrup - a cafe culture classic - whilst my wife says you can't find a better Eggs Benedict in town. Definitely recommended!
