The Rolling Stones’ stadium rock probably isn’t most people’s idea of a soundtrack to accompany breakfast, but in an odd way, Start Me Up and Jagger singing “button your lip, button your coat”, are pretty apt.
That’s what accompanied my big breakfast at the funky, slightly bohemian Roasted Addiqtion in the middle of Kingsland the other morning.
With its casual atmosphere, comfy couches, changing artworks, and outdoor tables, Roasted Addiqtion attracts a regular clientele of musicians (from nearby Kog studios); students (writing essays, reading texts); and locals from Arch Hill and Morningside.
It makes Roasted Addiqtion the kind of place where you run into people you know, or recognise from the band that played at the King's Arms last month.
It’s a little harder to be so enthusiastic about the food. But, it’s wholesome and nourishing and the big breakfast ($17.50) comes with large and earthy field mushrooms, a generous pile of bacon alongside hash brown, fried capsicum, tomato, eggs and thick focaccia bread.
You won’t go away hungry that’s for sure. And, added bonus, the coffee is good. You might, however, feel that the tables (which always feel slightly sticky) needed a wipe.
But that’s what you expect at a place where the emphasis is on casual and comfortable, rather than stylish and sophisticated.
If that sounds like you, or you have an essay to finish, a newspaper to read or royalty payments to discuss with the rest of the band, then this is your place.
People watching from the street-side seats is good here (after the rush hour traffic and consequent fumes have died down).
