Metro Top 50 - 2012
Best New Restaurant 2010 - Metro
At Sidart, his playfully named restaurant in Ponsonby, master chef Sid Sahrawat makes some works of art. However no different to I have had at other 4 or 5 star restaurants..
The evening was overpriced at $95.00 for just 3 courses. I worried a bit about since it is tucked in the end of the drab Three Lamps Plaza, a small restaurant that only seated about 48 but they were full to capacity and it was a lovely area with a little balcony with great views of Sky Tower.
Creatively, it's living on the edge by changing your menu as often as Sid does and that's uncommon in most restaurants. The vast majority of even quite good places introduce a new menu four times a year. It must be hard keeping the enthusiasm up when you're doing the same thing day in and day out, cooking must get close to factory production.
Sid makes striking use of ingredients that I just didn’t think would go together but do. Although he still uses a lot of foam which may date pretty soon.
The menu gives you an inkling of what you might be getting without giving it away. For Entrée I had Quail, Cauliflower, Date & Pinenut and my main I had Snapper, Mushrooms, Horseradish, Brown Butter. Both were very nicely presented and tasty dishes that worked. Can’t say the same for the side of over salted Polenta and the disappointing Cheese board with only 2 cheeses and one with next to no flavour. The cinnamon poached pear was gorgeous but not enough. The desserts didn’t look any better than my cheeseboard.
As for the service, one waitress whom was allowed to serve the wine to 48 guests out of the 3 waitresses was ridiculous. We had to ask to have the caraf at our table so that we didn’t have empty glasses any longer.
Over all it was an interesting experience and because of the strange service and the over pricing I won’t go again.
I have to say this is THE BEST food experience that I ever had in my life so far. No kidding!
I tried the 10 courses and it was delightful, my total compliments to the chef Sid Sahrawat and the rest of the chefs because every piece of food they serve is a piece of art that melts in your mouth.
Each course is an amazing experience in your mouth, plus the service is incredible and I could say more amazing things about this but you have to try it for yourselves.
Totally worth it and totally recommended.
It is an experience.
If you are not food lover but also adventurous then it is not for you.
A truly phenomenal eating experience. What more can be said? Well frankly ALOT! It was a gastronomical delight with food to impress even the most discerning palate. We selected the 10 course tasting menu that could not be faulted. Each dish was mouth watering sublime and the presentation faultless. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was cosy and intimate, and the decor and city views amazing. This was most undoubtably thee best dining experience we have ever had in NZ and yes I am a kiwi. I cannot rate it highly enough. I have never written a review in my life before today but SidART certainly deserves one. Thanks for a great night. Take it from me, book today!
Fantastic dining experience - very close to Auckland's best. Tried SidArt's Tuesday test kitchen last week - basically a well priced degustation experience.
I'm not usually a big fan of style over substance but I'm happy to say SidArt scored top marks for both. The food is so visually appealing that you don't really want to tuck in however one you start, there's simply no stopping you. For $80 its at the higher end, but worth every single dime.
One of Ponsonby's hidden secrets.
I think that Sidart's food is best described as interesting with not your normal flavours going on. If you're looking for a relaxed environment with good food, then I'd give Sidart a go. It's also a little bit more flexible as you can choose whether you want to go with the tasting / four course / a la carte menus.
The atmosphere in Sidart's a bit more relaxed in comparison to some of the other places I've been to.
Service was good. Staff are friendly and were helpful in recommending dishes / wine.
There were a number of surprises during the meal, both at the start and end. Great visual effects with the use of liquid nitrogen. Also complimentary chocolate truffles which were given to us in little Chinese takeaway cartons for the journey home (mine didn't last the night). They were sooo rich and yum.
Sidart offers a relaxed, cosy environment with really delicious and innovative food. Highly recommended.
PS: don't pass on the eel if it's available as a selection for your First Course. It was really good.
What a fantastic dining experience - spent a good couple of hours at SidArt in Ponsonby savouring all the delicious tastes, textures and combinations.
You can really see why SidArt is considered one of Auckland's best restaurants - Sid Saharawat it a culinary genious!
What an experience! Having not dined out in Ponsonby for a fair while we were extremely pleased to have found this little gem.
Sidart is pretty small but what it lacks in size, more than makes up in fine food and terrific service.
I went for the 4 course a la carte menu - scallops to start, then lamb loin, the veal with rabbit and then finished off with the most exquisite Passionfruit Parfait...the best $90 I have spent in some time!
Make sure you get along to SIdart before the word gets out about this Ponsonby beauty.
