At Coco's Cantina, the staff are the loveliest, quick thinking professionals you could want in a restaurant. I love their system of writing your names on a chalk board rather than on a pad – good to see they are saving trees. When it was out turn to be seated we were shown with lightning speed our table. The barman and the waiter were friendly and efficient. I certainly couldn’t fault them.
We started the night with shared bruschetta as there’s plenty for two as an entrée - gently chargrilled so the lingering taste was reminiscent of a campfire - topped with mozzarella, mushrooms and pesto. It was a lovely way to start the night and great with my Pinot Gris.
My only problem was to do with the main and it seems a review the Herald wrote 3 years ago said that the Chef over salted the food and I have to agree on my main. He either has a salty palette or he didn’t taste. Being that I had Pork and that’s already a salty meat (although cooked perfectly with a lovely crackle) the lentils were too salty that I couldn’t finish it. I was having such a good time with my friend and the wine was flowing, she had a good fish dish so I didn’t have the heart to say anything as a typical kiwi.
We were full enough that we couldn’t fit in dessert but then there wasn’t anything amazing on the menu that I wanted to try if I had the space.
I would go again with good company and try something that might not have the chance of being salty. I hope the Chef can be less heavy handed on the salt. Watch this space.
Informal and unpretentious place that consistently delivers excellent food. Don't let the fact that you cant book a table put you off - it's one of Auckland's hidden gems.
Service was way too slow and whilst menu claimed they took dietary requirements seriously, that was a bit of a joke. Mains took well over an hour with no explanation and not a healthy choice available.
If you want a table at Coco's, show up early. When we got there at 6.45pm, it was full so we put our names on a waiting list but as we were first on the list it was only a short 15 minute wait and we had a table due to our numbers dropping from 12 to 6. It’s a bustling noisy place where the who who go and my group. Hahaha. Not the best though if you want to hear conversations.
We received a handwritten menu which denotes this place is pretty casual although a little pricey.
We skipped entrees and went straight to mains in which I had the Pork belly. And I have to say it was cooked very well with a perfectly crispy top. Although I have to say beetroot it came with was strange with its hazelnuts and croutons and extremely salty. And I have read other reviews that say this. My friends fish was divine and thoroughly enjoyed as was another friends salad. The Polenta chips were deep fried and good but also salty.
Two of us had dessert, and I have to say that my Chocolate Tart was NOT salty and was moist chocolaty and warm with a lovely berry coulis to balance it. My friends Tiramisu he said was also very good.
The service was very good and my waitress very nice. I’m happy I experienced this place as it has been on my list for a while but because of the price for what it is I don’t think I’d go back in the near future.
Exceptional dining experience at Coco's Cantina from start to finish. Atmosphere is perhaps Auckland's best - Coco's is always full but that never seems to stress anyone out.
The lemon and ravioli ricotta is a taste to be savoured...do try it!
After hearing so much about Coco's Cantina over the years I finally got to visit this restaurant during the week and can honestly say, it really loved up to my (high) expectations.
It was so full and although we did have to wait at the bar for about and hour and half, the cocktails, tapas and friendly staff made that time fly.
Absolutely loved the gurnard (fish of the day) and the chocolate tart was a sheer delight.
I'm now one of the converted - you've simply got to try Coco's Cantina for yourself!
Great little rattly neighborhood cantina. Tasty, rustic fare. Well priced, with warm friendly service and a fantastic atmosphere to boot. Host was fantastic and the evening an excellent salve to the appalling experience we suffered at the hands of another Auckland restaurant over the same weekend. Coco's Cantina is a true testament to the fact that a multi-million dollar fitout doesn't make a great restaurant. Service, atmosphere, food and spirit will shine through every time. Nice work Coco's.
without question the best pork-belly in Auckland! Thought it was pretty reasonably priced too considering Coco's Cantina is in the metro top 50. The pork belly was served with these moorish sausages and pesto/apples and at $28 a deal in my book. Can definitely recommend Coco's Cantina - fun times.
Coco's Cantina is a foodies heaven. Ignore the (outwardly looking) shambles and relax and soak up the atmosphere - it's great. Calamari is fantastic (some of the best I've had in Auckland) and the ravioli a real treat. The friendliness you get at Coco's Cantina is second to none.
really enjoyed coco's cantina - can see why it did so well at the metros this year. A really buzzy atmosphere that you'd expect from a k road venue - another Coco's Cantina visit is on the cards again soon.
seriously friendly Auckland restaurant - my partner and I are self confessed foodies and have been meaning to visit Coco's Cantina for quite some time. Finally got the chance to pay Coco's a visit last week and wow - what an experience. Without doubt, the real appeal of Coco's Cantina is the atmosphere - brilliant.
terrible ... don't go there ;)
A Strange Experience in a Soul less Atmosphere, with Cooking that didn't really taste, Calamari was empty of flavour, and the Pork in a Pasta dish was Mince Pork. Not sure what Fusion it was going for, but it didn't work for us, and at $62 for 2 was overpriced for the K Road Location. Good Luck.
A safe friendly haven in a mean street. Great food and a great atmosphere.
The front of house staff are efficient, friendly and welcoming. The Chef is 1st class. My favourite eatery in the city. Cannot recommend highly enough. This is one to watch.
We went to Coco's Cantina for my mother-in-laws birthday last night and simply had to heap praise on the place - it's a really welcome addition to K'Road and a restaurant that we'll be visiting more often.
I had the chicken (a half chicken in fact) that simply melted in my mouth while another hit in the party seemed to be the fish of the day...well done Coco's Cantina - we'll be back for more
