Rad, Mt Eden - Cafe Review

The Food

It’s a small but delicious menu, with breakfast options till 10:30am (we really want to the try the peanut butter pancakes!) and then some nice looking lunch options. We went straight to the rolls, eschewing the awesome-sounding ‘Smashed Meatballs’ that we must try next time. The chimango was filled with chicken in a lovely crunchy baguette with a juicy mango salsa and slaw, whilst the fish roll had delicious chunks of white fish with a perfect accompaniment of wasabi mayo in a brioche bun. Be warned – the brioche gives it a sweetness that initially is a little quirky, but it works well. These come in cute little white cardboard boats, which definitely keeps the eating side of things casual. We snaffled a caramel slice back home – all gooey goodness.

Drinks

A good range of juices and smoothies (or as they call them ‘Smooooothies’), with names like ‘This sh*t is Bananas’. The coffee is Flight, and the flat white we had was on the mark.

Vibe

Really cool. The fitout is simple but very effective, and we love the minimalist but beautifully designed uniforms that all the staff were wearing. So many good spaces to sit as well – we loved the small tables that jut out of the wall next to the counter.

Service

Very friendly, though we didn’t realise (and wasn’t initially told) that you had to order at the counter. Table service would good if possible, especially with the number of staff that seemed to be working.

Highlights

We love the water that comes to the table, which smells like passionfruit but is actually a green rose tea infusion. I’m not going to lie… it’s the colour of pee, but is a refreshing change to standard tap water.

The Bottom Line

Rad is… well… totally rad. Bright, funky and with great food, it’s the kick in the backside Mt Eden Village needs.
